At this point in our growth as a marketing firm, we feel driven to shift the focus from my individual expertise to our strengths and approach as a team. So, with Hillary Weiss Presswood's creative direction, our recent photo shoot became something bigger. Instead of capturing us at work, we aimed to capture the ✨spirit✨ of that work. This shoot was thematic, it experiments with metaphor, it leaned into our creativity and our backgrounds as dancers. In fact, I insisted we avoid all work-related props. No laptops, no phones... And so, this photo shoot was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Rather than holding a team meeting, we were “on set.” All of us stepped into brand new roles. Jessica Pearson shared with me afterwards that it felt strange not setting up the shoot or managing the schedule... Instead, we were there as the subjects, the ones in front of the camera, the ones at the center of the story. We spent a full 8-hour day shuffling from space to space in TODO Studio, setting up shots that speak to the major components of our marketing process. Every project is a creative collaboration 💫 Whether it's a commercial campaign or a creative test shoot with my team, we always bounce off ideas from each other and from experience this is when we produce the best body of work. Every project starts with a discovery call - this is a chance for us to get to know each other and ask any questions. I like to think of these as creative brainstorming sessions where we lay down all the ideas on the table. If we had an office, I imagine this would involve a large whiteboard and as many coloured pencils as we could find! This is also an opportunity for the client to present any crazy ideas they might have and give insights into their brand so we can step away and build something unique just for them. These calls are followed by a creative treatment which includes details on the concept, lighting, props and sometimes location. I find this is a great way to make sure everyone is on the same page and happy with the creative approach before the big day 💥 My favourite thing about being a commercial photographer is to experience and see concepts turning into beautiful images that speak to so many different people. When business is slow, I use to look for clients in hopes I would land one. Instead this is what I do now: ⭐️ Review My Portfolio: It’s good to get several eyes on your portfolio because it could be lacking in something necessary for future clients. For me (at least today), I can honestly give myself a review without taking it personal. Development always take time. ⭐️ Take Classes: Many classes are offered online and even in person depending on your area. Personally, studio lighthing is an area I’d like to grow further in. Don’t forget investing in your growth is apart of the journey of owning a business. So please don’t cheat yourself by comparing yourself to someone else. ⭐️: Practice, Practice & Practice This is self explanatory so I don’t have to go too deep. Just stay curious and bring other creatives along the ride with you. I’d like to outsource more stylists in shooting because you never know what will catch the eye of your future clients!
