This program genuinely changed my life. Every year, Happy Brain Education (HBE) offers a group of Students from Marginalised backgrounds, a scholarship. During year 12, I was fortunate enough to be one of these students - receiving Wellbeing, Mentoring, and Tutoring across the year, for free. But the effect that this program has had, and continues to have, on me, extends well beyond the Realm of Academics. 'Belonging', is an idea that you really start to feel in VCE - with your identity being tested and questioned by every teacher, counsellor and parent in your life. In my experience, both as a student and as HBE's Student Wellbeing Coach, this is a question that our Marginalised Youth is plagued by more than most. 'Who am I?' is not just a question of want, and passion - it's a question of need and survival. It's not as simple as picking a degree that you're interested in, or planning a healthy study schedule. Because the truth is, not everyone is born to the same opportunities and standings. This, to me, is where HBE opens a door for our students. I'll give you an example. As part of the program, I was paired with a mentor throughout the year. What stood out about this relationship, was that my mentor had experienced my struggles. Seeing someone who had actually lived my story and persevered, made me trust in a system that had never before worked for me. The domino effect that this one instance had on my life, is incredible. This landed me my first job, a community, countless opportunities to pursue both my passion of writing and my pursuit of psychology - and so much more. To put it shortly, it opened doors for me, that I thought would always be closed. Any academic institution can invest in your dreams, but it takes character and a great deal of introspection to invest in a person beyond their ambitions. HBE's initiative is a testament to this. They look at your experiences and invest in your story. We're now entering the final day of our Fund-raiser. Trust me when I say, you want to be a part of this.
