What is the Caribbean’s best attribute? The Honorable Carlos James, Esq., Minister of Tourism for Saint Vincent and The Grenadines, graciously lent his time for a chat with me about why resilience may be the best way to describe the people and culture of the Caribbean. Here’s why I agree: - Caribbean communities have shown resilience in overcoming challenges such as natural disasters and economic downturns. This fortitude can positively influence the tourism industry by fostering trust and stability. - In turn, initiatives that empower local communities, such as training programs and economic development projects, community-based tourism initiatives, and preserving cultural heritage can further enhance resilience and contribute to long-term prosperity. - Multiple sectors have adapted the broader island community’s spirit of resilience by remaining agile and responsive to world travel patterns. Our collaboration on the opening of Sandals Saint Vincent and The Grenadines earlier this year was a meeting of minds on how resilience within Caribbean communities can be a key asset in creating sustainable growth and development across the islands.

At Cairns Convention Centre run by Cairns Post I spoke at the Future Cairns lunch about the prospects of Cairns. Four mentions of “Cairns” in a single sentence isn’t bad, right? What also isn’t bad at all are the future prospects of Cairns. The tourism recovery will continue. In dollar terms pre-pandemic levels are already reached while fewer people are employed in the sector. That suggests untapped potential. Structurally, Australia can be expected to amp up its Defence spending in the coming decade. Cairns will be one of the beneficiaries of this change. As a regional town (cough, I mean city) Cairns is remarkably young, mirroring the demographic profile of Queensland. That’s one of the benefits of running an economy based on young industries like tourism and Defence.

Located on the southeastern coast of Australia, Sydney is one of the most important ports in the South Pacific and a melting pot of cultures, offering a rich tapestry of experiences. Its dynamic cultural life is a blend of artistic, ethnic, linguistic, and religious communities formed by waves of immigration. Sydney is home to more than 650 suburbs, spread across 33 local government areas. The city is built on low hills surrounding a huge harbour with numerous bays and inlets and is perhaps the only city in Australia with a genuinely international atmosphere. Yet, it remains a very Australian city, with a nice compromise between its British heritage and the South Seas attractions of its climate and environment. Sydney’s climate is humid subtropical, with mild winters and warm summers.
