When sustainable development is pursued without a focus on human rights, it risks perpetuating the very inequalities it seeks to eliminate. Development that displaces marginalized communities, exploits natural resources, or ignores the needs of the vulnerable cannot be called sustainable. In fact, 90% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) align with human rights frameworks, underscoring how crucial human rights are to advancing development and reducing inequalities. Without the protection of rights, efforts to end gender-based violence (GBV) are undermined, perpetuating cycles of abuse and inequality. Today marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week, a time for us to recognise the milestones in the reconciliation journey and to reflect on the role we play to build, foster and support relationships and communities that value First Nations peoples, histories, cultures, and futures. Jean Hailes first worked with women in remote Aboriginal communities nearly 30 years ago. Today, we continue to work with communities and Aboriginal community controlled health services to support First Nations women and girls and to develop culturally safe health resources to support their health information needs. But when it comes to addressing the vast inequalities in health outcomes, there is so much more to be done. Now more than ever, we need to commit to working towards reconciliation and justice so all First Nations peoples, especially women and girls, can live in an equal Australia. #NRW2024

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is vital to foster understanding, healing, and cooperation for a harmonious society. It reminds us of the need for ongoing efforts towards Reconciliation and the importance of creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The AUSMASA team was honoured to undertake The 7 Steps—Practical Reconciliation by Evolve Communities recently, and we are committed to supporting Reconciliation, in the #workplace and beyond. In support of NRW, now more than ever, we reflect on what we can do individually and as an organisation to become better allies. We hope to inspire more allies to create a kinder, more inclusive Australia. Here are some reflections from our team 😊 #NRW2024 #IndigenousCulture #FirstNations #Reconciliation #Ally #Diversity

Addressing environmental issues and tackling gender-based violence (GBV) need not be mutually exclusive goals. A recent NORC evaluation of USAID grantee programs shows that integrated approaches can be highly effective. Our comprehensive evaluation involved seven grantees worldwide, and indicates that programs utilizing pre-implementation assessments and demonstrating the flexibility to adapt to unforeseen challenges were particularly successful in: 👉 Significantly raising awareness about GBV among grantees. 👉 Strengthening the capacity of local environmental organizations to address GBV. 👉 Reducing economic, social, and intimate partner GBV. NORC’s Jessica Wallach explains that "bundling GBV sensitization training with livelihood activities that were of economic value to participants and their spouses could help break through initial resistance."
