Starting today: 2 days all about hydrogen technology developments at the Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe in Hamburg, Germany. The Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe is a solutions-oriented forum to discuss the development of new technologies to bring hydrogen into the mainstream for stationary and mobile applications. At the Hydrogen Technology Expo 2024 Fraunhofer IMM presents three developments: its ➡ methanol-reformer, ➡ ammonia-cracking and ➡ methanation technology. For more than a decade, we have developed a family of reformers for decentralized hydrogen supply with focus on fuel-cell based applications. Our 75-kW methanol reformer is a prime example of compactness and efficiency. Thanks to a proprietary catalyst formulation, our system performs under high standards of stability and reliability. Being an ideal carrier for the storage and long-distance transport of green hydrogen, Fraunhofer IMM conceived a cracking process for the reconversion of ammonia into hydrogen. This is done by using our well-established microstructure-reactor and tailor-made catalyst technology. Fraunhofer IMM's ammonia process exhibits high efficiency due to its autothermal character. Another novel application of our microstructure-reactor technology and catalyst synthesis is a process for carbon-dioxide methanation. Our technology incorporates a highly efficient heat-management system, leading to high CO2 conversion. It finds special application in biomethane production at biogas plants. Subhasish Mukerjee, our Chief Scientific Officer at Ceres, had the privilege of delivering a plenary talk at the IACC 2024 (Integrated Hydrogen Production with Carbon Capture and Utilisation) conference on Wednesday 11th September. This event was hosted by the University of Surrey and the International Association for Carbon Capture. Subhasish spoke on Ceres' breakthrough technology for green hydrogen and clean power generation. His presentation highlighted how our solid oxide fuel cell (#SOFC) technologies can provide efficient and scalable solutions to help decarbonise emissions-intensive industries, including steelmaking, ammonia, and future fuels. Technology spotlight: The demand for low carbon hydrogen is on the rise, and achieving more efficient and affordable production has never been more crucial. 🧪🌍 Traditional methods, such as alkaline systems, have lower initial costs but suffer from reduced efficiency at around 70% and lack adequate dynamic response capabilities to handle variable renewable power. In contrast, proton-exchange membrane systems offer higher efficiency at approximately 80%, albeit at a 40% higher initial cost. SurreyH2, a start-up from our 2024 #TechX cohort, addresses these challenges through its pioneering “SurreyLoop” innovation, which utilises a low-cost zinc catalyst instead of rare earth metals in a closed-loop system. This approach offers: ✅ Overall efficiency exceeding 90% 💰 Reduced capital expenditure by up to 68% 💡 Dynamic response and storage capabilities SurreyH2 is currently advancing towards constructing a demonstrator to showcase the technology.
