🇰🇪 🇸🇬 This time we mean business: #Kenya and #Singapore have recently come to an agreement to eliminate double taxation, promising favourable opportunities between the two countries as Kenya seeks to position itself as a strategic #business hub for Asian investors. Finalised during the recent UN General Assembly by Kenyan Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Singapore's Vivian Balakrishnan, the agreement is set to ease cross-border trade and investments between the two countries. 📝 Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs) aim to prevent individuals and companies from being taxed twice on the same income, and this most recent one supersedes a previous 2018 agreement. Clarity in tax rules means less confusion and fewer disputes over where income taxes should be paid. The changes in taxation will particularly affect companies engaged in sectors such as shipping, logistics, and FinTech, sectors where Singapore already has a significant presence in Kenya. Importers, exporters, and investors will also feel immediate relief, particularly in industries such as agribusiness and port management. Indonesian government is constantly thinking of ways to improve FDI into various areas. One of them is utilizing special economical zones. Earlier in the week the government announced plans for four more new special economical zones as well. INVEST IN THE PHILIPPINES TODAY! 🇵🇭 In my recently published book, “Why Invest in the Philippines?,” I have provided not only a breakdown of the policies that the government has recently implemented, but also policies that the government is likely to implement in the near future. This would arm potential investors with foresight and allow them to adapt or plan ahead accordingly. It also provides an outlook on the Philippine economy as well as an overview on the business regulatory backdrop in the country. In the end, attracting foreign investors requires not only offering tax incentives, but more importantly, further improving the ease of doing business and reducing the cost of doing business. Through our international tax and investment road show, I have been in a position to listen to the concerns of foreign investors who have attended our investment and tax briefings. Last month, we conducted the road show in East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea). Currently, it is being conducted in the UnitedStates (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Washington) and will be held in Europe (Spain, Germany, Netherlands, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) next month. After these road shows, I plan to meet Secretary Frederick Go, special assistant to the President for investment and economic affairs, to discuss all the concerns and feedback we gathered from our investment and tax briefings. One of the recurring concerns raised was the VAT refund. While the EOPT Act introduced the risk-based approach in processing VAT refund, which is similar to my proposal for a risk-based audit, we still need to address it directly. To this, I am proposing the establishment of a Tax Refund Center, which is separate from the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Moreover, it would be helpful to establish a Consultative Council composed of representatives from foreign chambers of commerce in the Philippines to provide an avenue for discussion and resolution of concerns and issues related to foreign direct investments that prevent foreign investors from investing or expanding in the Philippines. Taxation in the digital economy: CASE STUDY OF MOROCCO🇲🇦 "Navigating the digital frontier of taxation: challenges and opportunities in the modern age." It was a fantastic chance to conduct research on taxes in the digital era with Morocco's Fintech industry serving as the case study. I learned a lot about the regulatory environment, compliance standards, dangers, and prospects for businesses in this industry, so it was a really educational experience. We were able to comprehend how companies operate within the complicated framework of tax rules and regulations and devise strategies to reduce the cost of compliance for enterprises. Overall, we determined the fintech sector's income streams as a component of the digital economy, determined how value creation is impacted by digitalization, drew potential strategies for tax evasion and avoidance, examined the difficulties in taxing this sector of the economy that has gone digital, and developed potential. The video summarizes the various sources of revenue streams, the changes made to the tax policies in Morocco challenges that comes with digitalization and the proffered solutions. Carrying out this project has made me gain a whole new light regarding taxation in developing countries and I will love to do this again.
