Overseas-trained nurses are using the UK as a stepping stone to more lucrative work abroad, new research by The Health Foundation shows. In analysis of applications for the Certificate of Current Professional Status (CCPS), which certifies practising nurse status in the UK, the think-tank found that in 2022/23, over 12,000 UK-registered nurses applied for a CCPS in order to register outside the UK. This is more than double the number the year before and four times more than in 2018/19. Overseas-trained nurses, who first qualified outside the UK and the EU, accounted for seven in 10 of these applicants in 2022/23. It's so much more multifaceted than pay alone. Although I would say pay is a top issue. I have seen on social media people share letters that other countries examination boards are declining them the opportunity to apply for nursing registrations in other High income countries, due to them residing in a red list country as determined by the WHO. people have advised via social media that as the NMC and UK do not bar people sitting their TOC (CBT) to use this as a "bridge" to get employment opportunities in those other respective countries. this will further exacerbate our retention of IENs, some do not see the UK as even a mid term goal, just short term to obtain registration for another country. do I blame them? no. if someone is desperate and determined, they will find a way. there needs to be a collective approach into the ethics of red list countries and recruitment in the UK. nursing pay is not representative of the complex skills and qualifications individuals hold. this needs meaningful review.
UK losing nurses to three higher paying countries, data suggests More evidence has been published which suggests the number of nurses leaving the UK for better-paying jobs abroad is rising. #nurse #nurses #nursing #health #healthcare #workforce #recruitment #nursepay #career https://lnkd.in/dwHkBQRd

The significant demand in Australia for Registered Nurses remains, the supply of overseas trained nurses is there, yet we have a system that still needs urgent Government attention to remove the unnecessary barriers. At Whiddon, we are passionate about growing and developing our people, and employing local talent, but sadly, the supply is just not there to meet the needs of the industry. For more on this, check out this great article from our EGM People & Culture, Jacky Hopwood - insightful and could not be more spot on.
Australia’s demand for nurses will significantly exceed supply by next year, and aged care in particular, is battling ongoing workforce shortages in critical roles. I recently spoke with The Weekly Source about the opportunity we have to reform current pathways for overseas Nurses to work in Australia. There are significant barriers for these much-needed overseas nurses, with costs of up to $10k, waiting times of 12-18 months, and restrictive locations for completion of exams and practical training. The Government has a critical role to play through investing in resources to open-up additional places for people to do the examinations, to look at more accessible locations, and to provide some incentives or assistance with funding - because people simply cannot afford it and Australia needs these skills now. https://lnkd.in/g25Uw6cR #agedcare #registerednurses

Another fresh batch of NZ trained nurses ready for Australia. Te Whatu Ora won’t be hiring them. Workforce, workforce, workforce. That’s what I heard the Minister of Health Dr Reti say time and again. I heard him say that just last weekend at the New Zealand Medical Students' Association (NZMSA) conference. And yet here we have an entire class of NZ trained nurses about to graduate without guarantee of a job. What was the point in spending so much money in advertising and recruiting overseas when we have nurses here? What’s the point in spending hundreds of thousands if not millions of taxpayers dollars on training NZ nurses only to send them packing. What’s the point in being a nursing school for Australia? Who’s making the decisions here and what direction is our healthcare system taking? How is this getting our country back on track? Seriously. 🤯🤯🤯 #nursing #nurse #workforce #health #healthcare #publichealth #nzpol Margie Apa Andrew Slater Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora
