Researchers anticipate that solar panels will generate the highest volume of waste per unit of energy compared to other electricity generation sources. The disposal of over 60 million tons of electronic waste from PV panels, potentially containing hazardous substances like lead, chromium, and cadmium, poses significant environmental risks if landfilling or concrete additive are the chosen disposal methods. To address the environmental impact of products like solar PV panels, governments worldwide have implemented environmental management strategies, including product stewardship schemes and extended producer responsibility (EPR). However, specific directives and responsibilities for PV panel eWaste are often lacking. Comprehensive legislative measures are crucial for the collection, transportation, and recycling of PV panel eWaste to ensure sustainable development. Several countries, especially those with substantial solar PV capacity, have already implemented legislation for the recycling and management of electronic waste, particularly from photovoltaic panels. However, in the U.S., federal laws for the safe disposal and recycling of end-of-life PV modules are lacking. Washington and California have developed their regulations, tax incentives, and are establishing a recycling program for PV modules. Still, in the absence of collective programs such as PV CYCLE in the U.S., the need for voluntary certifications such as version 3 of the R2 standard managed by SERI can allow the producer of the waste to recycling stream to have confidence in the recycler doing the right thing and limiting liabilities. Solar eWaste Solutions and its principals have supported the development of the Appendix G to the standard setting the details required for proper reuse and recycling activities.

The #bilsteingroup not only focuses on avoiding CO2 - we also produce our own #electricity. Where we are: In 2022, 77% of our global electricity consumption was generated from renewable sources. At our production site in Ennepetal (Germany) and our logistics centres in Gelsenkirchen (Germany), Chesterfield (UK) and Venda do Pinheiro (Portugal), we generated 9.3% of our renewable energy on-site with #photovoltaic systems. We purchased the remaining 67.7% of our electricity from renewable sources. This avoided more than 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Where we are going: By 2030, all our sites worldwide will be powered by 100% renewable energy, generating more of our own electricity and avoiding the remaining emissions by purchasing green energy certificates. #futureofmobility #automotive #sustainability

Reaching this objective will require, among other things, a self-sufficient supply of electricity from locally sourced renewables. This is where Sol over Brabrand (Sun over Brabrand) comes in.
