Text: 🛑 Stop Mandated Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) in Prince George's County 🛑 Today, we stand with small businesses and workers in Maryland! The proposed PG 406–25 bill could mandate Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) for all county construction projects, which would exclude 90% of Maryland’s contractors—many of whom are small and minority-owned businesses. This policy could stifle economic opportunity and increase costs, hurting local workers and businesses. It's time to protect fairness, open competition, and ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly. While President-Elect Trump’s campaign rhetoric suggested deporting 15–20 million immigrants, the Brookings Institute estimates the number at closer to 500,000 - 1.5 million. Even at this lower figure, the residential construction market could face significant challenges, particularly in states heavily reliant on non-U.S. citizens for building and construction labor. This potential labor shortage could lead to delays in projects, increased costs, and a slowdown in the housing sector's growth. States with booming housing markets and high demand for new construction are likely to feel the effects the most. #Infrastructure and planning to top King’s Speech. Employment rights, planning laws and UK infrastructure are set for major overhaul, starting with new legislation to be announced in the King’s Speech. The King will outline 35 bills designed to set the foundations for the next four years and meet Labour’s election pledge to increase economic growth. Mark Reynolds, chairman and chief executive of Mace plus co-chair of the Construction Leadership Council, predicted that the #construction sector could be among the main beneficiaries. Commenting “The three key things are planning, #housing and industrial strategy. I expect to see something on the industrial strategy in the King’s Speech. I also expect there’ll be something around workers’ rights and particularly how the government can help #SMEs.” Ahead of the speech, Number 10 said: “The package of bills will focus on growing the economy through #turbocharging building of houses and infrastructure, better #transport, more #jobs and securing clean #energy – helping to make every part of the country better off.” Full article: [https://lnkd.in/dx8dveiy] Construction Enquirer

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and Massachusetts AFL-CIO President Chrissy Lynch make a strong case for Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) in the Boston Globe. "In the past three years, the Biden-Harris administration has delivered more than $20 billion in federal investment to Massachusetts. When these federal dollars flow into Massachusetts, project labor agreements help ensure that they support job growth. When these federal dollars flow into Massachusetts, project labor agreements help ensure that they support job growth. With a long history in both the public and private sectors, PLAs are collective bargaining agreements between workers and contractors that ensure good wages and benefits, safe working conditions, and sustained investment in the local economy and workforce." #projectlaboragreements #plas #jobgrowth #infrastructure #infrastructureinvestment #electionshaveconsequences

Amy Penrose, Associate in our Property team, has featured in Construction News, discussing how the Labour Government will reshape the planning system with emphasis on freeing up "greybelt" areas. “If local planning authorities decide against development on newly designated greybelt land, the government may step in, despite the wishes of the local community. Labour has consistently promised a tougher approach on so-called ‘nimby’ councils”, said Amy. 🔗Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e2yz_ZNP #HousingPolicy #PlanningAgenda #ConstructionNews

📝 The future of the High Line is once again under threat, and executive director Alan van Capelle is setting the record straight to #ProtectTheHighLine. His recent op-ed in the New York Daily News outlines why—while we support development of the Western Rail Yards in a way that supports the needs of the community and the High line—the newly proposed development plan is gravely threatening both our park and our community's interests. Alan, who is a former union organizer with the building services union, also does some critical myth-busting around the proposal and our opposition of it, reinforcing our support of community-minded development and union labor: "The developers’ plan is wildly unpopular in the community—because of design choices that advance a limited private agenda rather than provide public benefits. As a result, it is proceeding into a maelstrom of political risk. With better design choices, it could be moving quickly toward breaking ground on public-spirited development already allowed by the 2009 zoning. These unions want the city to reap the benefit of thousands of good new jobs required to develop the site. So do we. We want these union workers to get to work, supporting the growth of our community and city." Want to join us in the fight to #ProtectTheHighLine? The first quarter of 2024 was a busy period for construction in Wales. Following the expected resignation of Mark Drakeford earlier this year, Vaughan Gething won Welsh Labour's leadership race in March to become Wales's new First Minister, so what could this mean for The Principality's construction sector? First impressions suggest he will be more of an ally than his predecessor, who shelved all new highway schemes and called in major construction projects such as Cardiff Parkway for further Welsh Government scrutiny after planning consent was granted. Additionally, the Welsh Government passed the new Infrastructure (Wales) Bill in April. This will bring forth major changes to the legislative framework, which the government hopes will speed up the consenting process for major infrastructure projects on both land and in the territorial sea.
