😾 The Never-Ending Rise of the Discount Copycats. A really interesting read from Louise Eccles on ‘the attack of the discount clones’ – and their own-brand lookalikes - https://lnkd.in/gqvEkKrW The ascendancy over the past decade of ALDI and Lidl in the UK (around 18% market share collectively) and ALDI in Australia (~10% market share) has been nothing short of phenomenal. And, during a cost of living crisis it’s no surprise that that pace of growth has continued. There’s a huge amount to like about the discount retailer offer – but the copycat products and packaging has always felt a bit ‘tacky’ – a seemingly successful but contentious tactic. As the article covers, there’s been very little brands have been able to do about it, expensive legal battles have often ended disappointingly for brands, both big and small. It's a challenge more common in the UK than the rest of Europe. ‘In 2018 Andrew Keeble, the founder of sausage firm 'Heck', publicly called Aldi “a parasite sucking all the goodness and creativity out of our brand" after it launched chicken chipolatas in similar packaging.' Strong words. But, in the UK at least, there might be change afoot with the new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill – ‘which is set to include a ban on goods that mislead the public.’ But what’s a brand to do in the meantime when it faces packaging copycats? As frustrating as it might seem, the right path is often.... Keep calm and carry on. Sticking to your guns is typically the right strategy - after all, the success of the existing packaging is evident in the fact it has led to the imitation. Focus on the brand through both pack and supporting communications – emphasise what the brand's meaningful advantage is — over all competitors not just the copycat. Remain consistent - https://lnkd.in/g6KDip6c and if change is needed to modernise and/or standout versus the competition, take an approach of considered evolution to maintain relevance and endure - https://lnkd.in/ggATiDuj
