As planting season draws near, our spirits are filled with anticipation and enthusiasm! Last week, we had an invaluable half-day session with McCain farm managers and leads—including McCain Farms of the Future, McCain Research Farm, McCain Valley Farms (Florenceville & Grand Falls), McCain Farms, and McCain Fertilizer—to lay the groundwork for the coming year. At McCain, safety is not just a priority; it's a way of life ingrained in our ethos. We are committed to ensuring the well-being of our staff, researchers, visitors, and vendors, day in and day out. Therefore, our session began with a focus on safety protocols and precautions tailored to our farms, fostering an environment where everyone returns home safely. We discussed a myriad of vital topics, ranging from learnings from the 2023 crop year, agronomy plans for the 2024 crop year, R&D initiatives, climate resilience strategies, and advancements in equipment, machinery, and technology. We delved into optimizing resource utilization and discussed the many invaluable insights gleaned from the McCain Research Farm and the Farms of the Future. We aim to disseminate these insights across all McCain corporate farms and share them with our growers. By doing so, we aspire to empower our growers, facilitating informed decisions on regenerative practices and innovative technologies for their own farms. A heartfelt thanks to Sam and Mac for all their insights and experiences shared. As the saying goes, "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." True to form, our team demonstrated profound collective wisdom and expertise. Farming, we understand, is an art continually refined through experience and learning. What truly resonated was our collective culture—an environment where fresh ideas are welcomed, smiles are abundant, and teamwork thrives. Together, we forge ahead, crafting robust strategies for climate mitigation and steadfastly supporting our cherished growers. Growing food is really hard. This is my 9 year old harvesting raspberries in our garden yesterday. The few that have survived slugs, flies and torrential rain. And probably squirrels 🐿️ When I work with my clients on their sustainable sourcing journeys, my starting point is empathy. I encourage them to empathise with the farmers in their supply chains who have possibly the hardest jobs in the world. Building a trusting, understanding relationship is the bedrock of driving change. Regenerative agriculture is our future and getting there together will take time and trust. What an exciting day with Schreurs & Sons team 👩🌾. Dust hasn’t settled in after #HortConnections yet…we are already back on the farms looking at delicious Celery and Leeks in Clyde and Tarwin, VIC. Always a pleasure to meet open minded and forward thinking growers, who invest in future and youth. We know a lot of hard work goes into growing good quality crops, but it is so much harder to do it sustainably and lead on innovation front.
