Filling in application forms can be one of the most sian (Singlish: boring, frustrating) things to do, and I have definitely gotten requests from startups on whether they can just "send us a pitch deck and not fill in the long form". However, it is something that, while painful, isn't quite avoidable if you need structure and efficiency to assess and process hundreds of applications. Here are some of the top tips to put together a stand-out application (and since you're already putting in the effort to submit one, why not put in a little more to give yourself the best chance) 1️⃣ Draft your responses on a separate document for easy review and edit until you are ready to copy-paste and make your final submission 2️⃣ Get someone outside of the team (and perhaps non-technical) to read your responses and feedback on whether your answers clearly convey your most attractive qualities (make sure it's someone isn't shy to tell you the truth) 3️⃣ Keeping to the recommended word count shows you are able to communicate well and succinctly (which gives us the confidence you can similarly do this in other communications to potential investors or customers) 4️⃣ Different questions are asked for a reason, something is wrong if you are repeating chunks in different questions 5️⃣ Your solution & business model should be clear how it fits into the value chain e.g. you are developing a special recipe which you will (i) use to produce your own branded product vs (ii) license the recipe to food companies vs (iii) both! 6️⃣ We spend about 6-8 min scoring each application and if we are going to have a hard time understanding your solution and what makes you special, or we have to make assumptions or logical leaps, your application will very likely end up in the "No" pile Of these, I think point 2 really might be the most important step because they can be a neutral party to feedback on the other points. And truly these are probably quite applicable regardless of the programme / thing you are applying for. Would love to hear your thoughts on this~ 🌱
