When I moved to Australia from India, I had a choice to make:  Pay premium rates for every home repair, or learn to do it myself. I chose the hard path and learnt: — basic plumbing, carpentry, wall painting, gardening, gutter cleaning and other general repairs. A home is a system where each part affects the whole. Your procurement function is also the same. A blocked gutter doesn't just affect one area; it impacts your roof, walls, and foundation. Just like how a single supplier decision affects quality, operations, and finance. Deep expertise in ONE area is valuable. But in 2024, it's not enough. You need to keep adding different skills to your arsenal. Each one compounds your value. Each one connects another dot. In large businesses, Procurement Officers are responsible for assessing products, services, suppliers and negotiating contracts. They are also responsible for ensuring that approved purchases are of a sufficient quality and are cost-efficient that would be beneficial to the company, which they must abide by the company regulations and reports to the chief procurement officer (CPO). Procurement managers also play a critical role in ensuring that organizations have the resources they need to operate effectively and they determine the best sources of supplies for the company. As a procurement officer, you track the supply usage for the company, analyzing trends of use throughout the company. You then research vendors that provide quality supplies at a fair price. Overall, they must be able to negotiate to ensure the five “rights” of procurement: The right of product, price, location, quantity, and quality. Working in procurement is a global profession. You may buy things from the global market or work with a global company. You can easily move around the world working in different positions and companies, still within the procurement profession and the average salary for a procurement officer in NGN 150k - 160k per month. After reflecting on my 3 decades in the procurement space, I have come to the realization that a successful procurement function requires two obvious ingredients. Talent and technology/tools. As procurement executives, we all spend our energy on looking for creative strategies to make improvements in these two areas. It sometimes feels like a never-ending search for the perfect tool and the perfect procurement professional even though we also know neither one really exists. We have amazing people on our teams and we provide them with the best tools that our budgets can afford – we should all be proud of that. However, I recognize the search will go on 😊 My observation over the years has been that it’s typically quite difficult for any organization to focus on both of these priorities at the same time, predominantly due to limited funding. Do you invest in better tools that can improve your team’s productivity, or do you invest in your people and hope that they can deliver with somewhat suboptimal tools? What if you could deploy an application that improved the quality of your procurement tech stack while simultaneously improving the quality of your team’s work?
