Our former UC Davis PhD fellow, Minami O., shared her reflections recently in a post entitled: "From Storybooks to Startups: My Journey Through Food, Science, and Innovation." She talks about her career journey and her work with Supply Change Capital earlier this year. Minami shares, "I immediately felt connected to SCC’s thesis. It matched perfectly with my personal and professional goals. Focusing on the intersection of food, culture, diversity, and technology, their “theory of change" is based on the idea that diverse leadership, coupled with cutting-edge technology and culturally relevant food products, can create more sustainable, equitable, and healthier food systems." Minami served as our deep tech expert in residence, specializing in novel foods like alternative proteins and bioengineered foods. She leveraged her expertise in food science and cultivated meat to evaluate over 120 startups, perform due diligence, and source early-stage deals. Check out her full post linked below 🔗

What a week at the Future Food-Tech Alternative Proteins event! 🚀🌱 Nadav Berger, our Founding General Partner, shared his thoughts at the investor panel, emphasizing that early-stage innovators need to understand the food industry's value chain and map out true pain points. Solving inefficiencies through AI is a prime example. “AI will be in everything we do, and excitingly, this will transform the alt proteins space for the better," Nadav stated. 🤖✨ Our key takeaways from the event: 🧪 Precision fermentation is ubiquitous, with companies of all sizes finding new and innovative ways to leverage it. 🤖 AI's influence is growing in product formulation, consumer insights, and overall business operations. 🌱 Ingredients are taking center stage. Whether it's chickpeas, mycelium, or novel oils and fats, there's a shift towards B2B opportunities and food service rather than building retail consumer brands. 💪 Companies that have endured recent challenges are now leaner, more focused, and dedicated to building fundamentally sound businesses. 🏗️ Infrastructure remains a major hurdle, with a need for greater government support and alternative funding options for large capex projects. In the interim, startups are forming partnerships with corporates who have excess capacity. These insights underline the dynamic nature of the alternative proteins space and the innovative solutions driving the industry forward. PeakBridge is proud to have been a Gold Partner at the event and to have shared the stage with: Steve Molino, Principal of Clear Current Capital, Rosie Wardle, Co-Founder and Partner at Synthesis Capital, Shayna Harris, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Supply Change Capital, and Ashley Hartman, Managing Partner at Bluestein Ventures. 🥇 Peter Bodenheimer Startup Nation Central StartLife Edmond de Rothschild The Good Food Institute Sweden Foodtech NC Food Innovation Lab KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub Edible Planet Ventures EIT Food Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) #futurefoodtech #alternativeprotein

🕓 How it started v. how it's going 🎉 Can you believe that we're celebrating our 2 year anniversary today?! This is how our story began: a biorefinery professor and a brilliant PhD student researching algae in a Dutch university lab. But here's where it takes an unexpected turn... They discovered that algae proteins mimic egg functionality - the holy grail of food ingredients. While pondering how to scale algae production, they had a realization: What if there was a better solution with huge scalability potential using existing infrastructure? Enter yeast - similar to algae but already produced at scale. They refined their technology to upcycle (or better - revyve) primary and side-stream yeast into exceptional, minimally processed, natural and sustainable texturizing ingredients using existing food industry equipment. That’s how revyve (previously known as FUMI ingredients) was born! This simple yet revolutionary idea took off. Within months, we won a Rabobank Sustainable Innovation Award, partnered with AB InBev, and attracted top talent. Now, we're a team of +15 unstoppable scientists, industry veterans, and food lovers, backed by Royal Cosun and Oost NL. We've scaled to industrial level and launched our first ingredients, offering unmatched performance and sustainability. And we're just getting started! 🚀 #Foodtech #Sustainablefood #Foodinnovation #Entrepreneurship #Startup

We are proud to announce that EIT Food Accelerator Network alumnus Blue Tree Technologies Ltd. from our 2023 cohort has secured self-affirmed GRAS status, successfully scaling its solution with Israeli juice manufacturer Priniv, using its patented process to selectively remove sugars. This is a great achievement, and the startup is now in talks with leading juice manufacturers around the globe. Blue Tree Technologies Ltd. cuts sugar, using ultrafiltration coupled with adsorption to selectively remove disaccharides, such as sucrose, lactose and maltose from natural beverages such as juice, milk, and beer without sacrificing taste or compromising brands’ clean label credentials. Founded in 2020 by Didier Toubia (cofounder and CEO at cultivated meat startup Aleph Farms) and Yuval Klein, Blue Tree Technologies Ltd. offers a turnkey solution, fully integrating their system into a partner’s manufacturing line. "Consumers want natural, less processed, clean label products, and Blue Tree can deliver both. In 2023, we fully scaled up our solution and expanded our development to other categories beyond orange juice. Our system underwent significant internal and external review and safety testing. This process included direct interaction with the FDA to ensure the system meets all relevant safety standards. We plan to license the system to juice and beverage producers around the world, and we’re currently negotiating with large-scale manufacturers in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. What our partners appreciate about our team is that we come from the industry, so we know how to approach manufacturers and provide them with a very agile solution." Michael Gordon, CEO Blue Tree Technologies Ltd. Investors in Blue Tree include OurCrowd, Tnuva, Tempo, Finistere Ventures, Siddhi Capital, NevaTeam Partners, and Ratio Technologies, says Michael Gordon, who is currently talking to an undisclosed corporate venture capital firm about raising additional capital to fund its commercial rollout. Congratulations to the entire Blue Tree Technologies Ltd. team and everyone involved. #foodsystemtransformation #startupacceleration #foodtechinnovation
