It's been a big couple of days. You may have seen that #nursing and #midwifery peak groups are coming together to support health system reform. There are plenty of Alliances in health (I've been involved with, and founded, a few). What's distinctive about this one is that it's built on trust at the President/CEO level of each organisation. No secretariats, no MoUs, no membership fee...just trust. And it works so much differently and is so much more powerful because of this. We need more of this in healthcare. #health #healthcare #primaryhealthcare #nurse #nurses #nursing #midwives #valued #visible #respected
APNA has formed an Alliance with eight other leading nursing and midwifery organisations to run a national campaign to promote nurses and nursing. The Alliance will work with governments on significant primary health care reform to ensure nurses and midwives can work to their full scope of practice. This will improve patient access to care and build strong career pathways for nurses. Read more in the joint media statement: https://lnkd.in/gRpV6tg2 #NursesAreTheSolution #ScopeOfPractice

As we celebrate #InternationalNursesDay2024 this is concerning news. So we need a fresh view on: • How we #atttact - across the whole community, race, gender age etc … • #Differential entry points - many don’t or can’t afford university entry. • How to #retain - covid hit hard and many who would have retired and returned are choosing not too. • #Reduce #attrition rates from nursing programmes. Investigate why we have leavers & introduce solutions that are co-designed. #Pay has always been an issue so long term this has to be addressed. The #new #generation of #nurse is also looking for #portfolio #careers. So how does the #NHS and partners address and possibly facilitate this. Are we attracting at the right #age? Young people have made #career #choices at 16years and base academic study based on where they want to be.. let’s get in there #early. It’s long term but we need to #investtosave. This is based on a series of listening sessions carried out in the last 12 months locally with NHS Nursing & midwifery (& AHPS) staff. I feel a long blog is needed… there is a need for multiple solutions as one size will not fit all. Thank you to all our #Nurses, it’s not just #oneday, for many it’s a lifetime of #compassion, #commitment #kindness let’s retain them and keep it this way 🙏🏽 Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust James Mullins (RGN, RMN) Crishni W. Statement from the Care Provider Alliance on the NMC Independent Culture Review The Care Provider Alliance is deeply troubled by the findings of the independent culture review of The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The investigation reveals serious issues in parts of the NMC. Whilst some NMC employees report working in a healthy, supportive environment, others feel trapped in a dangerously toxic culture. There are allegations of discrimination and significant failures in safeguarding and fitness to practise processes. These problems strike at the heart of the NMC's ability to regulate and support nursing professionals. About 33,000 registered nurses work in social care settings. Our sector relies on nurses to provide high-quality clinical care to those with healthcare needs, particularly in care homes but also in community settings. It is therefore crucial we have effective and trustworthy regulators to maintain standards, ensure public safety, drive improvement and, where necessary, enforce regulatory and legal compliance. None of the regulators are inspiring confidence at present. Of particular concern are the substantial backlogs in fitness to practise cases and the potential risks to public safety highlighted in the report. The care sector cannot afford delays or oversights in addressing concerns about nursing practice, as this risks the safety and wellbeing of those we care for. Chair of the Care Provider Alliance, Dr Jane Townson OBE said: “On behalf of the Care Provider Alliance, I urge the NMC to treat this report with the utmost seriousness and to implement its recommendations as a matter of urgency. The regulator must take swift and decisive action to address these deep-rooted issues and rebuild trust with both the nursing profession and the public. Our shared goal must be to ensure that all nurses, including those in social care, are supported by a regulator that upholds the highest standards of professionalism and public protection. Those drawing on care and support deserve nothing less.“ The Care Provider Alliance calls for the NMC to provide clear updates on their progress in implementing these reforms. We stand ready to support the NMC throughout this process of change. Homecare Association #care #homecare #socialcare #carehomes #regulation #nursing #NMC #nurses

NURSES ARE THE SOLUTION AND DOCTORS ARE THE PROBLEM, SAY NURSES AND NURSE PRACTIONERS The powerful alliance of peak nursing bodies has issued this statement following the scope of practice review: As a general principle … multidisciplinary teams do not need to be led by general practitioners, a false assumption circulated by the media, medical peaks and other platforms, driven by MBS billing arrangements rather than care needs of the person seeking treatment and alluded to in [Scope of Practice Review] Issues Paper 2,” they wrote in June. “This expectation has led to the significant lack of access to and affordability of [primary healthcare] due to ever increasing costs imposed by GPs and is instrumental in the failure of the [primary healthcare] system in Australia.” In summary what they are saying is that we don’t need medically trained GPs to provide general practice services to the community. Nurses and nurse practitioners can provide an equivalent service ( yet they have had far less training and experience than GPs). Then they blame GPs for the decline in access due to increased costs imposed by GPs????!!! Talk about gaslighting… What about the fact that Medicare rebates have failed to be indexed according to inflation and have been stuck at the same levels for 20 years? And rising practice costs? And declining numbers of medical graduates wanting to go into general practice because of the struggle to make a living with rising practice costs, Medicare rebates that have been frozen for twenty years, and the dilemma of wanting to spend more time with patients who are ageing and have obesity and increasingly complex medical conditions?? The future of healthcare for the population looks bleak if the government continues to support NPs to take over the role of GPs. Whilst I fully support NPs working collaboratively with GPs in primary care teams that are led by GPs, I am aghast at the prospect of NPs replacing GPs in primary care and working in a competitive not a collaborative model. This will lead to more misdiagnosis, more referrals for pathology and radiology referrals, more referrals to specialists and emergency, and ultimately a greater cost to the taxpayer. #generalpractice #scopeofpracticereview #nursepractioners #RACGP #AMA

🎉 Exciting news to wrap up 2024! 🎉 I’m beyond thrilled to share that my first PhD publication is officially out! This systematic review highlights a substantial gap in career frameworks for registered nurses working in aged care—both in Australia and internationally. The findings offer valuable insights into research methods and key elements, providing the foundation for designing evidence-based career frameworks. For those interested, you can find the article in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, at https://lnkd.in/gfBddfjR A heartfelt thank you to my co-authors Professor Karen Strickland, Professor Victoria Traynor Dr Marcus Ang and everyone who supported me throughout this journey! #PhDJourney #AgedCareNursing #NursingCareerFrameworks #SystematicReview #gerontologicalnursing #ResearchToPractice
