I was in one of those program, in general it is called F.E.C (Further Educated with Companies) Just share my experience: I was approached to join this program in a recruitment confluence. At that time, I was unemployed, difficult to have an interview and zero experience working in Finland. On the other hand, I got 5 years of experience working in international companies, and two degrees in Finland. I had two choice: 1) not join, and hopeless waiting for another interview; 2) accept this opportunities, have some working experience in a Finnish company, and probably also get some references if it will not end with a contract. Also worth to mention, I had two prerequisites which encourage me to join: 1) I don't need to contact a company and sell this program by myself. The program I joined already have some companies with long-relationship collaboration. 2) My spouse is working and I do not need to worry about my rent or daily life that much. Long story short, I was accepted by a company with good colleagues and wonderful products. I proved myself and almost got a contract. In those free training courses, I met international talents and Finns with the same struggling and we supported each other. The happiness ended when the company decided to apply for bankrupt. I contacted the people in charge of this program and they had not idea what should I do next. Many reasons 6-month will not end with a contract. Company bankrupt, reorganisation and your new boss has no idea what you do in these 6 months, company just want to enjoy free labour, position/budget has been cancelled during these 6 months, etc. On the other side of the coin, people do get unpaid working experience and some references. I got another contract offer, paid offer after this program within 3 months. And eventually those experience support me to land in my current position. For me, I guess the result proved as it is a method worth to try with those prerequisites I mentioned above. But with the new 3-month-rule (withdrawing the residence permit after you have been unemployed for 3 months), should International talent even consider it as an option? When a working resident permit extend from 1 year to 4 year, it provides more opportunities and spaces for people to plan their career and their personal life as well. But now, the moment a person is unemployed, a clock of doom start ticking and the choices are limited.

Does Expertise = Unpaid Internship in Finland? I was recently approached to fill an #internship #position again! While internships are valuable, I've already fulfilled my duties in that area. With two degrees and 10 years of experience, it feels odd when someone reviews my LinkedIn profile, praises my impressive experience, and then offers me an internship. Additionally, I've recently come across programs asking international talents to join a six-month program that teaches skills we already know for two months, followed by four months of unpaid work. I attended one of their meetings to understand more. From my experience, it's bizarre to ask professionals with years of experience to relearn their expertise and then work for free. These programs even charge companies around 8000 euros to get us, the international talents, as unpaid workers. Essentially, the company gets free workers for up to six months, the program gets paid 8000 euros per talent, and the actual talent doing all the work gets nothing, hoping for a job offer!
