Many years ago, I was awarded a scholarship to study scriptwriting with Hollywood maestro Robert McKee in London. Before class even started, he was VERY clear on one rule: “𝘗𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘯 𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴, 𝘰𝘳 𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘬𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘶𝘵.” Nobody dared disobey, because McKee had the aura of someone who is used to being listened to. So, I listened. And what did I learn? Quite a lot actually—and much of it is highly applicable outside of Hollywood. Robert McKee highlighted storytelling fundamentals that extend far beyond screenwriting. They’re pure gold for marketers and communication professionals too. Here’s how: • 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁: Emotional engagement wins every time. Don’t just sell; tell a story that resonates with your audience’s desires and challenges. • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Every great story has tension. Identify your audience’s pain points, then position your product or service as the solution. • 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Whether it’s your brand, customer, or persona, understanding their motivations and challenges allows you to speak their language. • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲: A strong, consistent theme ties everything together. Make sure your campaigns are driven by one clear message. • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Like McKee’s three-act structure, your campaign should move from problem, to challenge, to resolution—with your solution as the hero. Incorporating storytelling principles makes your marketing not just functional, but unforgettable. And what about the script from that course? Well, it’s sitting where many scripts go to die (in the drawer, which is getting quite crowded). But I’m still thankful for McKee’s insights.
