The rise and fall of good companies can break your heart. Stone lumber in Nampa provided the best customer service. I'd come in with my 4 barely managed kids, and they would always kindly help me learn about whatever home repair I needed. I'd take up to 30 minutes of their time and they never ever rushed me. By the time I left I would spend maybe $1.50 on a bolt. When my neighbor, a struggling single mom needed to move, the owner of the store sent his entire work crew to her home and moved everything. Stone Lumber treated their employees well, created a great family and work environment, however they are gone now. When the Owner died, the company died with him, and his employees, well I don't know what happened to them. You can do almost everything right, but as a matter of duty of care to your employees and community, you must create efficient systems, keep up with technology to stay competitive. I see ESOP companies proudly display the benefits they offer their employees, but all the employees stock in the company is lost when the company is taken out by a bigger more effective organization. Is your company making hundreds of millions every year? It doesn't matter. All of that will go to the bigger competitor if you don't perfect operations and create smooth IT systems. No matter how much your company makes in profit this year, you can be gone in 1-5 years when the big efficient company wipes you off the board like you never existed.
