Keep the Texas coast trash-free this Fourth of July! If you celebrate Independence Day with a beach party or cookout this year, celebrate responsibly to reduce your impact on the environment. Reduce disposable items on your beach trip! Plan to bring reusable items or find other ways to keep your trip from leaving litter on the beach. Single-use plastic like straws and bags can be mistaken by wildlife for food, injuring the animal. Choosing reusable beverage containers, utensils, and bags is one way to reduce trash. Keep fireworks fun! Fireworks are often made of non-biodegradable materials that contribute to beach litter. Heavy metals and other toxins leftover from fireworks can pollute nearby bodies of water. Fireworks also contain wood, plastic, and cardboard components that are often left behind. Ensure that you properly dispose of all scattered firework debris. Do your part! If you see litter, pick it up. Microplastics result from broken down pieces of larger plastic, so picking up what you can keeps this from happening. Other debris like fishing line, cigarette butts, and food wrappers are also common along beaches. Help keep our coast and beaches clean!

Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you'll never make it!!! If the bottles are picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some your extremities. The liquid that comes out is hot as well. Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards on in the gutter, etc. Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc. Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this. Share this with everyone you know

It’s All About Perspective! Last night, as I was taking out the garbage, I had an interesting realization. Over the weekend, we hosted a party with over 30 guests for two meals, resulting in a significant amount of food waste and, consequently, a lot of garbage. We ended up with over six full garbage cans. After bringing the fourth can to the curb, I thought to myself, “My oldest kids aren’t home, and therefore we don’t generate much garbage during the week. Instead of overburdening the garbage collectors, I’ll wait until Friday to bring out the remaining two cans along with any additional waste.” I felt quite considerate about this decision. However, this morning, it struck me that the garbage collectors likely drove by and saw the four overflowing bins. They might have thought, “This person is so inconsiderate.” This made me reflect on how often we perceive our actions one way, believing them to be considerate, while the recipients might perceive them entirely differently. Before jumping to conclusions, it’s essential to remember that the other person might have been trying to be thoughtful.
