🔹 EU Strategy for a non Toxic Aquatic Environment - Blue Print Initiaitve - For improved water quality in Europe’s rivers Take Aways from EU FP7 SOLUTIONS 2013 - 2018 Project 🔹 Many of Europe’s rivers contain mixtures of chemicals that are harmful to algae and aquatic life. Although the concentrations of some pollutants are monitored in the EU’s water bodies, there are doubts as to whether monitoring focuses on the right substances and what role is played by transformation products and combinations of substances. In the European FP7 project SOLUTIONS, 33 research partners among EU and led by the UFZ have developed innovative, predictive and protective tools, methods and practical solutions for identifying substances and priority mixtures, and their related adverse early toxic mode of actions that require priority treatment, assessing the risk posed by chemical mixtures, and minimising the pollution burden. 🔹🔹 Innovative System Thinking for #OneHealth 🔹🔹 Effect Based Monitoring for Water Chemical Mixtures, including acurate and more integrative diagnosis, safety framework enforcment, aiming to challenge and better secure all the water treatment plants performance efficiency and safety assessment 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eSwHgB-N (from beyond EU borders EPA representatives / Canada, Brazil, India, China, Africa, Japan, etc) 🔹 Paradigm shift project with the best EU scientific teams Unforgetable hybridation of knowledges and spirits, solutions orientated 🔗 https://lnkd.in/evvg2w9T 🔹 All these advances on chemical safety have been combined to Biogenomics to track #Pathogens and #AMR and are today embedded into #WBE / #WCE that allow to reconsider the Water Cycle as a Sentinel and Nexus for #OneHealth. Sustainability cannot be an afterthought in any meaningfully designed product, nor should it compromise the efficacy or accessibility of a healthcare device. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) device users highlight the life-changing advancements this technology has unlocked. Users will often also lament the increased volume of waste - including sharps and electronic materials - which they now must deal with as a result of CGM use. There is also a hidden burden of life cycle carbon emissions that arise from the manufacture, use, and disposal of these products. Which cannot be ignored. With the CGM market estimated to grow from $8.2 billion in 2024, to $13.5bn by 2030, and similar connected healthcare devices rolling out at pace. Now is the time to implement design strategies to reduce the burden on the user and the planet. In this study we looked at CGM devices available on the market through the lens of sustainability and user experience, these are the first steps of our process of creating meaningful change based on data-driven insights. We hope you enjoy our report - send us a note if you'd like to learn more! How do you design and develop innovative products and services that are more sustainable? To shed light on the Design for Sustainability process, we've just released a study that breaks down the steps in our approach, offering practical insights along the way. While applicable across industries, we've chosen to focus on MedTech as it's a category rife with regulations and restrictions to overcome (we love a challenge!) "First, do no harm" is the central principle of medical services, but the sector itself poses a considerable environmental burden. For instance, devices like Continuous Glucose Monitors, offer life-changing benefits but also contribute to significant waste and carbon emissions. Navigating this landscape can be daunting—where do we begin, what strategies should we adopt, and what does measurable success look like? I hope you can benefit from it. Another post on microplastics and why we need to talk more about them. This image is so powerful. I am reminded of the many readings I did during my public health program about the harms of microplastics on public health. Let's try to reduce the usage of plastic items — especially single-use plastics, adopt more reusable items and better manage plastics in our environment. Like I said in my other post earlier today — microplastics are not just an environmental issue, they are a human health issue.

We will be considering together the unique safety risks as we navigate both innovation and urgency as an industry. Those two things are not easy bed fellows yet to succeed we have to find a way to align them. Never before have be faced a deadline like the climate crisis as a species. We will look at the twin threats of Complexity and Unconscious Incompetence and how to select the right partners with whom to co-create to reduce complexity when it comes to safety, increasing competence and make making the right decisions a simple and repeatable process.
