The operation of the activated sludge process at municipal wastewater treatment plants (#WWTPs) results in significant #emissions of #GHG. Paz Nativ, Anat Weisbrod, and Ori Lahav propose a radical change in municipal WWTPs' operations. The first step is an intensive aerobic process with a low sludge retention time (<2 days) to maximize the heterotrophic mass yield, boost #biogas production, and eliminate #nitrification. The second step is separating the #ammonia from the effluents using a unique ion-exchange material for #fertilizer production.
