Food security is a pressing issue in Africa, where millions face hunger and malnutrition due to inadequate food production, high import dependency, and limited access to affordable food. Strengthening agriculture is essential for addressing these challenges. As African countries increase food production through modernised and efficient agricultural practices, they can reduce reliance on food imports, thereby protecting themselves from global food price volatility and supply chain disruptions. One of the key questions in #food policy debates in the last decades has been the role of cash cropping for achieving food security in low income countries like #Uganda, or #Ethiopia or many others in #Africa. This question has to be looked at in the context of #smallholder farmers. Take for instance, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) studied Ethiopia's #coffee farmers and using unique data collected on about 1,600 coffee farmers in the country, it was found that coffee income improves #foodsecurity, even after controlling for total income and other factors and after addressing the endogeneity of coffee income. Further analysis suggests that the pathway for achieving this improved food security is linked to being #better able to smooth consumption across #agricultural seasons. In contrast with food crops, coffee sales take place almost throughout the whole year, providing farmers with cash income also during the lean season. #smallholderfarmers #foodinvestment #foodvaluechain cc. 🌍 Boosting Africa's Food Security & Climate Resilience 🌱 🌡🌽 Global food insecurity is rising due to extreme weather, climate change, and conflict. Yet, Africa's territorial markets, deeply embedded in local culture, offer hope. These markets are more adaptable and accessible than corporate chains, providing a vital lifeline to millions📈 📝 Charles Dhewa, CEO of Knowledge Transfer Africa - eMKambo, highlights their importance: "The more food that comes in, the more people can get nutrition. When there’s more food, the prices are also managed, which means low-income people can also afford the food." 🥦🍅 ⚙ However, these markets face challenges—lack of infrastructure, investment, and government support. The future of agribusiness in Africa content The state of food security and nutrition in the world 2024 report has shown us that global food insecurity remains much higher than pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. In fact, over the past four years, levels have remained unchanged, with little improvement. In 2023, 2.33billion struggled to access adequate food regularly. This includes 864 million people who faced severe food insecurity. (FAO report) Africa has 65% of the world’s remaining uncultivated arable land, an abundance of fresh water and about 300 days of sunshine each year. More than 60% of Africa’s working population is engaged in agriculture, and the soil across most of the continent is rich and fertile. Smallholder farmers make up a large percentage of the population in Africa, with estimates ranging from 60% to 80%, these farmers are plagued with many challenges ranging from access to affordable farm inputs to shifting climate that is severely affecting their yield and productivity. The cold chain discussion needs to be on top of the agenda of businesses, governments, and farmers, because of inadequate refrigerated transportation systems and cold storage facilities, Africa’s small farmers suffer significant losses. Nearly a third (30%) of total harvests in Sub-Saharan Africa are lost due to waste. Innovative solutions to Africa’s food insecurity are increasingly focused on cold chain development, using solar power when necessary and expanding nations’ agro-processing industries. Food processing facilities not only add value and provide further export opportunities to countries, such as West Africa’s new chocolate makers, who utilise locally grown cocoa beans that traditionally have been exported raw, but local manufacturing also reduces food waste. Globally, 78% of the value of agricultural production comes from agro-processing. In Africa, the figure stands at half that, at 38%.
