In the latest episode of my much-loved series - ‘things I haven’t done before’… …I want to talk about the C word in October. Now, regular readers (the lucky ones) will know that I don’t like Christmas and I would usually be saying that it shouldn’t be mentioned until December. However, the activity from Dunelm - at the link below - really caught my eye and left a lump in my throat. The chain of homewares stores has a programme titled ‘Delivering Joy’ which encourages customers to give a gift to someone deserving / less fortunate by picking a tag from their in-store Christmas tree, which will have a local person’s details on it. This serves as a very strong reminder that, as we will be moving into the party season, we may all have team members / people around us that are dreading the next few weeks, and that we shouldn’t presume that ‘one size fits all’. As a HR consultant, I will be sharing a few reminders between now and Christmas about the things we can do - as business owners and employers - to look after our teams and those around us, and how we should be treating everyone as individuals. Kudos to Dunelm for this programme, and it is absolutely something that I will be taking part in. Day 3 about Tech Stack was another great session. Johann mentions that FreeAgent has a superior API than other bookkeeping softwares, but it is essential to link up integrations for the best efficiency. Mettle, RBS, Ulster, Natwest are all banks that integrate with freeAgent. 💡 I am poised to add Dext to my Tech Stack. 🌱

The Whole Truth Foods turned 5 last week. To mark the occasion, across the org, we renewed our vows. And I also wrote a letter to our investors. Sharing below. As is. Why? Because you (our consumers) are our OG investors. Not money, but you’ve invested your emotions and time in us. And because one of the many joys of building a brand called The Whole Truth, is I can say the same thing in every room. Nothing to hide! So please read this as if I wrote this personally, to you. I did. ———————————————— Dear <well-wisher of TWT> TWT turns five this week. YAY! Honestly, I can’t believe it’s just been five years. And I also can’t believe that it’s already been five years! Time seems to have both expanded and contracted (and stood still and moved at warp speed) along this journey. What’s remained constant though, is our mission. To rebuild the world’s trust in its food. To build a generational brand by always telling, and selling, the whole truth. To prove that capitalism can be a force for societal good. And to prove that building a 100% honest business is the shortest path to maximising long term shareholder value. Five years of staying the course, and we’re now caught in a virtuous loop. The more honest we are, the more consumers trust us, the more they reward us with their business, the more incentive we have to never break the trust. This loop, compounded over decades, that’s the real moat we’re building. Everything we do, from product to content to people and culture, is in service of ensuring we never break this loop. Hence, today, as we turn five, across the company, from HO to production to warehouses to our people in the field, we are coming together to recommit to our vows. I’d request you to be with us in spirit, and whenever you find the time, take a minute and recite the pledge too! *I ,<name>, pledge to tell and sell, speak and seek, say and pray, the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.* It takes a village to raise a baby. You’re our village, and TWT is as much your baby as it is mine. So thank you, and congratulations on your baby’s birthday! Cheers Shashank

Why is mom doing it that way? 🤔 Once, a small girl was watching her mom toasting bread. She noticed her mom cutting the edges of the bread before putting it into the toast-maker. Curious, she asked her mom, "Why is mom doing it that way?" Her mom replied, "Because my mom was doing it that way and taught me to do so." The girl then approached her grandmother and asked the same question. Even she replied, "It's because my mom was doing so." Fortunately, her great-grandmother was alive and nearby. The girl asked her why. She explained... "In our times, when toast-makers were newly introduced, they were smaller, and the bread was bigger. To ensure that the bread is toasted evenly, we used to cut the edges and ensure it fits in the toast-maker accurately. Now that both the bread and toast-maker are of the same size, you need not cut the edges of the bread." This story teaches us that because no one ever asked why mom was doing it that way, the tradition continued, leading to bread wastage due to cutting of the edges. There are many traditional methods and procedures formed to fit the situations of the past. We need to recheck if these methods still work in the present state of art before applying them. #QuestionEverything

Unfortunately, there is no supermarket for story ideas that you can shop when you have the need. Instead, keep your pantry stocked with stories. Many of our stories occur in the day-to-day, ordinary moments. If we don’t pay attention and write down these stories, we often forget them. #leadershipstorytelling #businessstorytelling #storycollecting
