Blattella germanica is the carrier of numerous species of viruses, bacteria and parasites, which can cause diseases in humans and domestic animals. As with other cockroach species, Blattella germanica can contaminate the foodstuffs it eats by depositing its excrement on them. Among the species of bacteria most commonly associated with this insect we find Salmonella and Escherichia coli, both relevant from a hygienic-sanitary point of view. Furthermore, it has been shown that Blattella germanica may represent an intermediate host for an acanthocephalic worm, whose infestations in humans can cause important medical conditions of the digestive system. Cockroach gel baits have become among the most effective and preferred products for cockroach control. Cockroach gel baits contain a highly palatable formulation with a low-impact active ingredient, indoxacarb. Its formulation has the unique ability to control cockroach populations at two levels – secondary control and tertiary control – so as to effectively overcome the high reproductive potential of the Blattella germanica. What facilitates secondary and tertiary transfer between cockroaches? There are three main mechanisms that contribute to the effective transfer of insecticides between cockroaches: Coprophagia, i.e. the ingestion of feces. Cockroach nymphs readily feed on the feces or rectal region of other cockroaches. Necrophagia, i.e. the ingestion of dead cockroaches. Combating Salmonella Infections with Genomics and #OneHealth #Salmonella infections are a major public health challenge, especially in resource-limited settings where food contamination is prevalent. These infections cause gastrointestinal distress, fever, and dehydration, with vulnerable populations at higher risk. #Genomics can transform how we tackle this issue. By sequencing Salmonella strains, we can track outbreaks, identify virulence factors, and monitor antibiotic resistance. This enables targeted interventions and effective treatments. A #OneHealth approach integrates human, animal, and environmental health. Improving food safety practices, public health education, and healthcare access for humans, promoting safe animal husbandry, and ensuring clean water and agricultural practices are crucial. In resource-limited settings, innovative solutions are essential. Low-cost genomic tools can facilitate local monitoring, community programs can educate on safe food handling, public-private partnerships can mobilize resources, and mobile health platforms can enhance #surveillance and response. Fecal contamination of natural water sources and reservoirs is a significant threat to public health and local economies in coastal environments. Coastal areas that rely on beaches and swimming areas for their economic state could be drastically affected by having their water contaminated with fecal matter. Fecal-contaminated water can also cause illnesses and outbreaks of gastroenteric diseases.    Traditional culture methods used by many regulatory agencies and public health officials will determine the detection and enumeration of fecal bacteria, but not the source.
