I recently spoke with 50 business leaders about AI adoption, and what I discovered was eye-opening: The AI gold rush isn't created equal. Here's the ground reality: 🧵 Over the past 3 months, I've had in-depth conversations with: -20 Fortune 500 executives -17 tech startup founders/CTOs -13 non-tech SMB leaders Here's what I found: -Big Tech & Fortune 500 Companies (20 conversations): The reality? It's often more about optics than impact. -70% admitted to AI initiatives primarily driven by top-down pressure -Only 25% could point to measurable ROI from AI implementations -65% acknowledged rushing AI integration to appease stakeholders One CTO at a Fortune 100 company candidly shared: "We're putting 'AI-powered' on everything. Half of it is basic automation rebranded." Tech Startups (17 conversations): Here's where the real transformation is happening. -80% focused on concrete productivity gains -Average reported cost reduction: 30% -75% implementing AI in core business processes -Primary focus: Engineering efficiency & customer service automation A Series B founder told me: "We're not doing AI because it's cool. We're doing it because it cut our customer response time by 67%." Non-Tech SMBs (13 conversations): The forgotten segment in the AI conversation. -85% view AI as "not immediately relevant" -Only 15% have any AI implementation roadmap -90% cited "unclear use cases" as main barrier -75% believe AI is primarily for tech companies Interesting insight: A manufacturing SMB owner said, "Everyone's talking about ChatGPT, but nobody's showing me how it helps make better products." 🔑 Key Takeaway: The AI revolution isn't one-size-fits-all. While big companies play the optics game and tech startups drive real innovation, smaller businesses risk being left behind. The real challenge isn't implementing AI—it's implementing it meaningfully. What's your experience? Are you seeing similar patterns in your industry? #AI #BusinessStrategy #Innovation #TechnologyTrends #Leadership

I have a hunch that GenAI is poised to revolutionize how businesses approach strategic planning. The classic Plan-Do-Check-Act model has already become more iterative, inclusive, comprehensive, and execution-focused in the past decade and could give way to an explosion of options and scenarios under AI that will make companies’ planning efforts look more like a VC. In a fascinating Wharton experiment, ChatGPT-4 came up with 200 new product ideas in about 15 minutes, outperforming a class of MBA students both in speed and idea viability and showcasing the transformative power AI can bring to strategic planning (https://lnkd.in/emyfTWwS). The takeaways for strategic planning seem clear: ▪ AI will dramatically expand the strategic opportunities set and improve input quality ▪ AI will expedite the end-to-end innovation process from idea generation to evaluation, creating more space for winnowing out ideas ▪ AI will demand new ways of operating emphasizing expertise, insights, rapid response, and process discipline for effective strategic 'teaming.' Human expertise will be required upfront to design the right prompts to generate quality inputs (i.e., ‘prompt engineering’) and at the back-end to filter and select the best ideas (aka judgment). Both are known innovation bottlenecks and critical for success. The future of strategic planning will require a blend of human expertise and AI capabilities, redefining how companies approach innovation and decision-making. In fact, embracing AI in strategic planning could propel organizations to operate more like VCs, for example: - Treating strategic initiatives as a portfolio of investments - Implementing a rigorous vetting process - Balancing riskier, high-reward investments with safer, incremental investments - Continuous monitoring and rapid pivoting from underperforming projects - Embracing a culture of innovation and experimentation. Would love to hear your thoughts. #GenAI #StrategicPlanning #Innovation

Taking stock of the AI craze for corporate innovators (Part 3): #OutsideIn innovation can solve for pain points with significantly more creativity. It has been 18 months since we all opened ChatGPT for the first time. Most corporate #innovators have moved AI projects through POC and MVP stages and are looking for scale and value. Time to take stock how this current wave of innovation is working for us. My third observation: Outside-in innovation can execute with significantly more creativity. Automating existing processes, even potentially end-to-end, does not fully capture the full value of AI. I can see many corporate innovators struggling to re-imagine their operations #AIFirst. As an example, I scraped the story below from my LinkedIn feed regarding automating the shipping return process for shoes. I want to give Google some credit here and say they probably took this example because it is easy to explain and understand and not because it’s the best application of their technology. But I do see that corporate AI programs risk being outflanked by more entrepreneurial setups. Happy to hear your thoughts and experiences regarding this in the comments below or by private DM. Note: The example of Footprint Technologies has not been vetted by me.

I've observed a recurring theme with organizations that are embarking on their AI journey. They're eager to build internal skills and foundational infrastructure, often focusing on chat-based solutions to harness unstructured data or create secure, internal versions of ChatGPT. While these steps are important and can be foundational, many are still scratching the surface. To truly unlock the value of AI, consider how AI can act as a personal assistant that takes action and accelerates productivity. AI agents and intelligent apps are great examples of this potential. Look at business processes or issues within your organization that make you question why they are still so manual or complex. Focus on areas where you often think, "there has got to be a better way." Tasks that take too long and hinder your organization's ability to move faster can be fertile ground for innovative AI solutions. Our team helps clients generate ideas and think more strategically about AI. Here are some suggestions to help you get started: 1. Identify Strategic Objectives: Begin by aligning your AI initiatives with the broader goals of your organization. Ask yourself which key challenges and opportunities AI can address. Focus on areas where AI can make the most significant impact, ensuring your efforts drive meaningful outcomes that align with your business’s vision. 2. Collaborate and Prioritize Use Cases: Engage with different business functions to gather a wide range of potential AI applications. Use a structured framework to compare and prioritize these ideas based on their feasibility and impact. Consider how these use cases can be scalable and reused across various functions with minimal rework, maximizing the value of your AI investments. 3. Foster a Culture of Innovation: Encourage your teams to think outside the box when it comes to AI. Provide the necessary training and resources to help them understand AI's potential and its applications. 4. Think Beyond Chat: While chat-based solutions are a great starting point, challenge yourself to develop AI capabilities progressively. Use each new capability as a foundation for the next, building more sophisticated AI solutions over time. 5. Integrate AI Holistically: Treat your AI initiatives as part of a comprehensive program. AI can simply be one component in a broader solution that incorporates various technologies and approaches to tackle complex challenges. Ensure these projects are collaborative efforts between IT and business leaders, avoiding disjointed efforts and maximizing value delivered. #AI #BusinessTransformation #GenerativeAI #Innovation #Leadership #Strategy #DigitalTransformation #IntelligentApps #Productivity #FutureOfWork

🚀 Unlocking the Potential of AI: From Secret Cyborgs to Organizational Transformation 🚀 AI isn’t just the future — it’s here, driving productivity gains across industries. Tools like Microsoft copilot, GitHub Copilot, and ChatGPT are boosting employee output by up to 25%+. Yet, while individuals excel, most companies are struggling to translate these gains into meaningful organizational change. A recent BCG survey revealed a striking insight: 89% of executives rank AI as a top priority for 2024, but only 6% have taken steps to upskill employees. This gap underscores the need for a structured approach to AI adoption. Here’s how organizations can bridge this gap: 🔸 Establish Communities of Practice: Foster collaboration and encourage experimentation by creating spaces where employees can share AI successes and failures. 🔸 Create Centers of Excellence: Centralize AI initiatives to ensure alignment with strategic goals while managing risks and compliance. 🔸 Embrace the Process: Follow a transformative path of assess, learn, experiment, build, and scale to integrate AI into the company’s DNA. In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, successful implementation isn't just about the technology—it's about understanding and guiding your organization's human dynamics. Every company has its unique innovation ecosystem, characterized by a classic adoption curve that spans from enthusiastic early adopters to hesitant late bloomers. Let me break down what this really looks like in practice: 🔥 Front of the Curve: The Innovators & Experts These are your tech-forward team members who are already: • Holding ChatGPT subscriptions • Proactively writing complex prompts • Exploring AI's potential without needing external motivation They're not just users; they're your strategic scouts, revealing what's possible and pressure-testing your AI vision. 🤔 Middle of the Curve: The Pragmatic Adopters This group is curious but cautious. They're saying, "Impress me. Show me how this actually works." Their critical perspective is gold—they'll demand practicality and real-world applicability. 🐌 Back of the Curve: The Laggards These team members will only engage if: • AI usage is mandatory • There's direct financial incentive • Comprehensive education is provided Strategic Implementation Tip: If you have 200 team members, aim to identify and engage approximately 24 people (12 from the innovative front, 12 from the pragmatic middle) who can become your AI transformation ambassadors. The goal isn't universal instant adoption—it's creating a thoughtful, staged approach that respects different technological comfort levels while steadily moving your organization forward. Are you strategically navigating your team's AI journey? Or are you expecting overnight miracles? #AITransformation #OrganizationalInnovation #TechnologyAdoption #FutureOfWork #LeadershipStrategy

🚀 Our teams are spending a lot of time thinking about Enterprise AI Adoption, and its clear that its surging. Yet there's a clear gap from experimentation to implementation, full roll-outs and yielding the business reward. A recent study reveals some key insights: • Only about a third of AI investment is spent on tech itself. • The majority of investment goes towards Consulting services, training and upskilling existing workforce, and onboarding new employees... But Why? "The technology itself is more or less a commodity. meaning, you know, my ChatGPT is as good as your ChatGPT and so the differentiation is largely going to come from the integration of the technology and business processes. There's no template, there's no blueprint, people will have to experiment and learn." As Stefano Puntoni, Professor of Marketing at Rotterdam School of Management, notes in the article in the comments. This shift highlights the importance of focusing on people and processes, not just the technology itself. As we move into this new era of AI implementation, organizations must prioritize strategic integration and workforce developlment to truly harness the power of AI. What's your take on this trend? How is your organization approaching AI adoption? #AIAdoption #EnterpriseAI #FutureOfWork #TechTrends

🌟 Embracing AI with a Fiercely Human Approach 🌟 Two years after the ChatGPT frenzy began, AI is no longer just a buzzword — it’s a transformative force reshaping industries. Yet, for organizations to unlock its true potential, leaders must focus not only on technology but also on people. 💡 According to our 2024 AI research, only 39% of companies offer the coaching needed to integrate AI into daily workflows. Resistance to change and skill gaps remain major barriers, despite 71% providing tools and 61% offering training. To thrive in an AI-driven world, organizations must adopt dynamic change orchestration — blending agile, human-centered change strategies with tools that empower employees to adapt and innovate. 🔑 Key to success: Engage and educate employees on AI’s capabilities and practical applications. Empower leaders to champion change through transparency and inclusivity. Evolve continuously, using feedback and adaptive strategies to stay ahead. 📈 Success stories like our partnership with Takeda Pharmaceuticals showcase the power of this approach: a 91% boost in AI proficiency and 162% increase in preparedness after just two days of hands-on workshops. As AI transforms work, the time to act is now. Let’s shape a future-ready workforce that embraces change with confidence and creativity.
