PERSEO Biotechnology S.L. has recently concluded a productive two-day general meeting in Thessaloniki on the 30th of September and 1st of October, held at the facilities of Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). The FUELGAE Project aims to develop an innovative model to produce advanced liquid biofuels, such as #bioethanol, from various #CO2 emission sources, targeting two industrial sectors: #biorefinery and energy-intensive industries. This will be achieved through the integration of a #microalgae pilot plant into existing infrastructures. 🌱 PERSEO Biotechnology S.L. will play a crucial role in this project by installing a photobioreactor that will utilise #CO2 generated from the #advancedbioethanol fermentation process to facilitate the growth of microalgae. Our team will be responsible for developing the process to produce 3G bioethanol from microalgal biomass rich in polysaccharides. 🧪 We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Giannis and the entire Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) team for their kindness and hospitality during our visit. Upon the completion of the FUELGAE Project, we aim to make a significant contribution to advancing Europe’s scientific knowledge and global technological leadership in the field of #renewablefuels. This initiative will enhance the technological competitiveness of the partners and their role in transitioning the energy system to a fossil-free basis by 2050, particularly in sectors like aviation and shipping, while also aligning with the EU's objectives for achieving energy independence. 🌍

I am thrilled to share that my 44th research paper, "Maximizing biofuel production from algal biomass: A study on biohydrogen and bioethanol production using MgZn ferrite nanoparticles,"has been published in the #AlgalResearch journal! In this study, we explored innovative methods to enhance biofuel production from algal biomass by leveraging the unique properties of MgZn ferrite nanoparticles. Our findings demonstrate significant improvements in the yields of biohydrogen and bioethanol, offering promising advancements for sustainable energy solutions. The article titled 𝐁𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞‑𝐀𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, provides an overview and understanding of methods for designing, developing and studying homo- or hetero- bimetallic single atoms catalyst for #watersplitting. Good things take time! What started as a brainwave on the beautiful beach of Crete during ISMET8 (@The International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology - ISMET) has finally turned into a manuscript we're truly proud of. Together with Miriam Edel and Benjamin Korth, we've compiled and discussed literature on the cathodic cultivation of aerobic autotrophic pure cultures, providing a detailed overview that we hope will be useful to those exploring the emerging field of oxic microbial electrosynthesis (#oMES). We also aimed to offer a quantitative comparison to other biomass production technologies. However, with oMES still at an early stage of development, a comprehensive technical and economic roadmap is missing - mainly because such assessments require complete energy and mass balances, which are currently scarce in oMES literature. This highlights the need for future studies to provide conclusive data on mass/energy inputs and efficiencies to guide further research and to determine whether - and to what extent - oMES can establish itself in the emerging niche of biotechnological carbon dioxide sequestration technologies. 🚨 Exciting Research Update from Gescher's Lab of Technical Microbiology - TUHH 🚨 We’re thrilled to share that Dr. Miriam Edel alongside Dr. Johannes Eberhard Reiner and Benjamin Korth, has published their work exploring oxic microbial electrosynthesis (oMES) as a potential alternative for biomass production! 🌿⚡ The study dives into the cultivation of aerobic, autotrophic Knallgas bacteria using renewable electricity and industrial CO₂/O₂ streams, focusing on 𝘊𝘶𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 and 𝘒𝘺𝘳𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘪. The #biogas industry in Germany is going through difficult times. For many of the roundabout 10,000 biogas plants, which in total supply electricity equivalent to the consumption of about 9,500 households, the 20 year support period of based on the #EEG (German Renewable Energy Act) will end soon. Many of them are not successful in the tendering processes for follow-up support and are urgently looking for business models to continue production. One promising element is #flexibilization, i.e. reducing production in hours with a low electricity price and increasing production in hours with a high electricity price. With more and more fluctuating #renewables like #PV and #wind in the system, these hours may turn into days. While adapting production volumes to the needs of the energy market is certainly a good idea, it comes with some challenges. When #flexible electricity production is realized by flexible feeding of raw materials, biological issues in the digester may arise. Plus, there are other challenges like how to maintain a stable heat supply for customers like schools, public pools etc. Our project #HydroFoam, which is funded by #BMEL through Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. (FNR) and coordinated by Lucie Moeller from Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), addresses these challenges from a multidisciplinary perspective: process engineering, microbiology, physicochemistry and social sciences all contribute to identifying problems as well as to developing and evaluating potential solutions. Our project meeting in Leipzig was a great opportunity to discuss these different disciplinary perspectives and get to know the labs and the research biogas plant of DBFZ Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH.
