#Filmmaking If you want to know why most of what streaming companies put out sucks... here's a quote from Brian Newman (referencing Keri Putnam's data-drive "U.S. Independent Film Study"): EXECUTIVE SUMMARY If you want to make a good movie, the movie must say something (read: speak truth to power). However, streamers have chosen to only acquire and make movies that say nothing so as not to offend potential subscribers (and totalitarian dictators/regimes, wherever they reside/arise). The result is entertaining but forgettable movies and shows.
As another wave of criticism hits Hollywood, this time coming from writers, it raises a crucial question. The declining viewership of Hollywood movies can be attributed to a surge in poorly crafted scripts and lackluster films. What if we allowed these underperforming studios to falter and envisioned a rebirth from the ashes of Hollywood? Perhaps by withholding financial support, abstaining from streaming platforms, and boycotting subpar content, we could demand a return to quality productions. A shift towards genuine storytelling instead of pandering could lead to a resurgence of truly remarkable cinema.

The number of ad-based streaming platforms is growing, and these streamers are increasingly trusting advertisements as a solution to the subscriber problem. At Upfront, Netflix recently noted that their ads-based plan accounted for 40 percent of all new subscriptions and now has 40 million subscribers worldwide The rise of these ad-based plans could affect the documentary #film market, either increasing the potential for larger budgets or creating a system more reliant on views and per-person revenue.
