In this piece on illuminem, I explore how impact metrics could evolve beyond the current ones, which often fall short of capturing the true depth of environmental and social responsibility. While B Corp certification presents as a beacon of social and environmental responsibility, the reality tells a different story. At its core, the certification remains trapped in "carbon tunnel vision", an overly simplistic focus on carbon metrics that has accelerated ecosystem destruction rather than mitigating it. The push for carbon neutrality often incentivizes monocultures, overlooking the intricacies of natural ecosystems. This shallow approach disregards vital ecological processes like biodiversity, nutrient cycles, water cycles, and regenerative land management. The result is a landscape devastated by exploitation masquerading as sustainability. To truly lead the change, we need holistic, science-backed metrics that understand and respect the complexity of nature: 🌱 Biodiversity over Monocultures: A thriving ecosystem relies on diversity, not uniformity. 🌍 Soil and Water Health: Tracking soil quality, water cycles, and nutrient flow must take priority over isolated carbon figures. 🔬 Ecosystem Understanding: Nature’s resilience depends on balance, something no carbon calculator can measure. It’s time to challenge the status quo. Certifications like B Corp fail to capture the true essence of sustainability and perpetuate systems that harm the environment they claim to protect. We call for a regenerative ecosystem framework that values resilience, diversity, and the intricate web of life that sustains us all. Let’s move beyond reductionist metrics and towards genuine, impactful change. The future of corporate responsibility must start with understanding how nature works, not just calculating its value. Is the era of "greenwashing certifications" finally over?
💯 support this Susana. It's time to look more deeply, holistically and create meaningful metrics and certification standards. This is literally a 100+ year biodiversity conversation (Steiner, et al) - with origins in native cultures dating far beyond. I hope 2025 and beyond brings meaningful action for the new paradigm.
Agree and share your perspective. Out of respect for our nomadic families and local partners (including agricultural, environment and wildlife specialists) involved in building our supply chain, our role at Tengri is to support and adopt their system of best practice in sustainability - not to impose an outside western system. Not many business leaders are willing to be lead by local people who know the land, plants and animals the best. Its crucial for a better system to be designed and co-created with input and consultation from communities and places impacted not in the global north.
