Ever wonder what a trefoil arch is? How about a guilloche? Coffer? Sidelight? Most #historic buildings are owned by private citizens who have little or no background in building #preservation or its allied fields. These owners–as dedicated as they are to preserving or refurbishing their property–often feel at a disadvantage when communicating with professionals well-versed in the complex jargon of this multidisciplinary field. There is help though! I wrote a guide just for you. The Dictionary of Building Preservation provides easy access to this terminology and helps the nonspecialist to understand and communicate with building and design professionals, preservation groups, government agencies, attorneys, and others concerned with building preservation. https://lnkd.in/e_UN8m_5

🏗️📰 **Historical Discovery Alert!** While installing some roof windows in a shop on Stokesley High Street, we seen extraordinary piece of history: newspapers from the 1860s, specifically pages from the Methodist Recorder, stuck beneath the floor joists and floor boards Why would these newspapers be hidden away under a floor? Back in the 19th century, newspapers were often used as insulation. This method was not only practical—providing a layer of protection against drafts and retaining heat—but also highlighted the resourcefulness of using every available material efficiently. Today, this discovery serves as a reminder that being resourceful is timeless. In an age where sustainability is key, revisiting old methods can inspire modern building practices. At Samuel Moore Roofing, we admire the ingenuity of the past and strive to blend traditional and contemporary techniques to deliver the best results in our projects. #HistoryInBuildings #SamuelMooreRoofing #HistoricalRenovation #Stokesley #Resourcefulness #OldMeetsNew
