Ramesh, a retired school teacher in Delhi, was always careful with his savings. 💰 He diligently invested in fixed deposits (FDs) to secure his retirement income. But a few years ago, inflation started to rise, slowly eating away at the returns he received from his FDs. The interest he earned barely covered the increase in prices, reducing his purchasing power. 😢 One day, Ramesh's son, who is a financial advisor, told him about Inflation-Indexed Bonds (IIBs). These are special bonds offered by the Indian government where the principal amount increases with inflation. This means even if inflation rises, the value of Ramesh's investment remains protected. 📈 💹 Here's how it works: Let's say Ramesh invests Rs. 10,000 in an IIB with a fixed interest rate of 5%. If inflation is 4% that year, the principal amount of the bond will be adjusted to Rs. 10,400. The interest payment will be calculated on this adjusted amount, giving Ramesh Rs. 520 (5% of Rs. 10,400) instead of Rs. 500 (5% of Rs. 10,000). This ensures his returns stay ahead of inflation and his purchasing power is preserved. Ramesh was happy to learn about IIBs. They provided a solution to the problem he was facing with traditional fixed-income investments. He invested a portion of his savings in IIBs, along with his FDs, to create a more balanced portfolio protected against inflation. 😊 The Indian Bond Market 💵 The Indian bond market is vast and growing rapidly. As of 2023, it is estimated to be around Rs. 220 lakh crore (Rs. 220 trillion). This includes government bonds, corporate bonds, and other debt instruments. Investment Opportunities and Penetration 🙅🏻 While the bond market is large, investment in bonds, particularly retail participation, is still lower compared to stock markets. This is due to factors like perceived complexity, lower liquidity (ease of buying and selling) compared to stocks, and a lack of awareness about the different types of bonds available. However, initiatives by the government and financial institutions are increasing awareness about bonds, including IIBs. These efforts are expected to improve investor participation and penetration of bond investments in the future. Bachat: "Bachat" is a Hindi term for savings but often implies more disciplined and regular saving habits, such as contributing to a recurring deposit (RD) or a fixed deposit (FD). RDs and FDs in India offer higher returns compared to savings accounts, generally ranging from 5-7% per annum, depending on the tenure and bank. Bachat helps in creating a more significant corpus over time, although the liquidity is lower compared to a regular savings account. 3. Investing: Investing involves putting your money into assets like stocks, mutual funds, real estate, or bonds with the expectation of higher returns. Unlike savings and bachat, investing carries higher risk but can provide substantial returns. In FY 2023, unclaimed insurance funds stood at Rs 2.06 crore. All of preserved wealth left unattained because of lack of proper communication with family. Open communication about finances is key.
