Welcome to UK Budget Day, and it is a big one for the new Labour Government and, more importantly, a British economy urgently needing to improve productivity, enhance growth, strengthen social safety nets, and ensure genuine financial stability. Per this column from two weeks ago (link below), there is very limited room, if any, for a first best design given the “initial conditions” associated with over-burdened public services, severely lagging public investment, high debt and deficits, heavy tax burdens, the rise in global interest rates since 2022, etc... As such, don’t be surprised by the amount complaints that will come from different quarters later today. No one will be entirely satisfied. The important analytical test is the extent to which this budget shifts the emphasis to growth-enhancing investment, protects the most vulnerable members of society, reforms the outdated fiscal rules, helps crowd in productive private sector activities, and communicates all this in manner that both emphasizes purpose and strikes a good balance between correcting past failures and improving future prospects. Ultimately, the summary assessment will boil down to how effectively the Government embarks on, and gets widespread buy-in, for what is known as the “relief and belief” journey – that is, relief that long-standing obstacles to durable and sustainable growth are being identified and addressed … and then belief that this is part of a sustainable and accelerating journey to a much better destination for current and future generations. https://lnkd.in/ew77dYks #economy #markets #UK #ukbudget #budgetday Project Syndicate
