Proud of my team’s work on this pivotal research piece that sheds new light on the state of play for decarbonization and ways to use decarb to drive real business value. We found ambitions are high (higher than we expected to see) but progress is lacking (worse than we expected here too). The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and VTT have calculated that utilizing biogenic CO2 could boost the added value of Finland's forest industry by billions of euros. 🌲 Also in our vision, CO2 emissions from pulp mills will become valuable export products like renewable fuels. Wrapping up two weeks of conference on the future of carbon capture, first at Decarb Connect EU in Berlin, before moving to the Carbon Capture and Storage Association Europe conference in Brussels. Sharing some key takeaways from the panels and audience with you. 👉 CCUS is now a reality and in rapid expansion. If you were still unsure, now is a good time to jump on board. 👉 The key bottlenecks are on the transport and storage infrastructure side. On that topic, we welcome the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) setting a binding carbon storage target of 50 Mt CO2/year in the EU by 2030. That excludes rapid developments in the UK, Norway and Iceland. 👉 There is a strong demand from industry for regulation clarity and public funding to kickstart the industry. CCUS projects are notoriously expensive. Expect renewed discussions with the new EU Commission triggered by the Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal. 👉 Partnerships, partnerships, partnerships. 🌍 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 & 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 As a full member of the CO2 Value Europe, CoLAB NET4CO2 recently participated in the 8th CO2 Value Days & General Assembly in Grenoble, to discuss the role of CCU in the future Carbon Circular Economy. We had the opportunity to attend different meetings, discussion groups and presentations where impactful projects in Europe were discussed, focusing on technology maturity and deployment, financing and certification of the CCU value chain. The 8th CO₂ Value Days provided a platform for building connections, fostering collaboration, and exchanging knowledge, bringing together key players in the CCU field. Worth mentioning, that Portugal was also represented in CO2 ValueEurope by colleagues from FCT-Univ. Nova (Ana Antunes and Ana Machado) with which we have an ongoing cooperation.
