It’s a measure of how much your actions contribute to climate change. 2. Ecological Footprint: A measure of how much natural resources a person, organization, or country consumes compared to what the Earth can regenerate. It considers factors like land use, water use, and waste production. 3. How the World Really Works: A Reality Check for Sustainability → by Lorne Michael Cousins → A sober and, frankly, fact-based reality check on sustainability with Vaclav Smil's "How the World Really Works." Introduction: A Grounded Perspective on Sustainability Challenges Vaclav Smil's latest work, How the World Really Works: The Science Behind How We Got Here and Where We're Going, provides a sobering analysis of the complex realities shaping our world. Sustainability professionals often grapple with the tension between optimistic visions and the constraints of energy, materials, and fundamental physical laws. Smil's book offers a grounded – some might say pragmatic, others 'pessimistic' – perspective on the possibilities and limitations inhe... → Full Article: https://lnkd.in/gW6Vy9tS #Essentials #Read #Environmental #Sustainability #SustainabilityDirectory

❓ Do you know which public-traded company shared their net-zero journey in a 2022 documentary? Hint: They started in 1994 before most companies even cared We're hosting Sustainability Manager, Joey Shea from the company TODAY along with our OnePointFive (opf.degree) Academy & Community The company (surprising at least to me) is Interface, founded by the late Ray C. Anderson (July 28, 1934 – August 8, 2011), a leading global flooring manufacturer Ray was inspired to act in 1994 after reading Paul Hawken's 1990 book "The Ecology of Commerce" despite the disapproval of his executives & employees I watched the movie recently - and outside cheesy 1990s corporate videos - was inspired by what Interface has been able to achieve starting early Here's some of their achievements from a UNFCCC article (🔗 link in comments) sharing how Interface by 2020: - reduced their carpet carbon footprint by 74% from 1996. - reduced market-based GHG emissions at carpet manufacturing sites by 96% in intensity from 1996. - sourced 75% of the energy used at manufacturing sites from renewable sources, including 100% renewable electricity at all factory sites. - made 60% of the materials in Interface carpet tile products from recycled or bio-based sources The biggest thing is that they demonstrated you can create business value from 'embedding sustainability' into the DNA of its business. They went beyond just seeing climate action as a cost or compliance exercise, which unfortunately is still a dominate perspective today If you're interested to watch it, the movie is called "Beyond Zero" and I've shared a 🔗 link to the documentary in the comments below Otherwise, follow me here, as I'll share the latest 2024 insights from the sustainability team at Interface, through our interview with Joey today ~~~ If you’re interested to join expert industry interviews like these live, join us in our next cohort 🔗 https://lnkd.in/er5HJeE2
