📣 Your thoughts on Beyond GDP   💡 What are your perceptions on beyond GDP policies, indicators and models?  We invite you to contribute to the development of the MERGE project by taking the time to fill out our survey! The survey questions help us assess awareness and perceptions of beyond GDP policies and indicators, and to understand how and why GDP is used in policymaking. Beyond GDP for policy analysis and national statistics Two weeks ago, I had the honour to give a lecture at the University of Utrecht, for about 50 students and staff of the Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS). The topic was measuring well-being. It was about two topics. Firstly, analyzing policy proposals by not only looking at the financial costs and benefits in the short run, but also looking at the costs and benefits for society in the longer run, i.e. about cost-benefit analysis. Secondly, about GDP for measuring the national economy and about well-being indicators that go beyond GDP. Cost-benefit analysis was illustrated by three examples. The first example are the flood risk safety standards in the Netherlands: since the 1960s these are the highest in the world due to cost-benefit analysis. The second example is Heckman’s analysis of the very high societal return on pre-schooling in the USA. This study was influential worldwide for convincing politicians about the merits of pre-schooling in terms of higher future income, lower crime and better health. The third example is the cost-benefit analysis on extra lanes for a highway in Utrecht and the trade-off with the trees of Amelisweerd. The traditional perspective of GDP and that of beyond GDP are illustrated for the development of the Dutch economy since 1820. The traditional perspective stresses the enormous growth in average material welfare, the rapid decline in the share of agriculture, the increased importance of all kinds of services and the big increase in government expenditure, e.g. on social security and health care. The beyond GDP perspective stresses the importance of the increase in life expectancy and changes in the environment and inequality.
