Many of our members gathered in Canberra recently for our 2024 AGM and to start to plan our strategy for the next three years. Over dinner we were thrilled to be joined online by Hans Jöhr, former Corporate Head of Agriculture, Nestlé, and one of the initiators for the establishment of SAI Platform and Robert Erhard, current President of the Platform and Nestlé's Head of Dairy, Corporate Sustainable Agricultural Development. It was great to hear their thoughts about what's happening to support and encourage sustainable food production and to tap into their extensive knowledge and wisdom. We look forward to working closely in 2025 with SAI Platform

🌿 It's time for a reality check, is regenerative agriculture actually going to fix our food system? Regenerative agriculture is all the rage; once a rarely used phrase, it has rapidly become one of the most cited business solutions. ‼️ However, of the 50 agri-food corporations that mention regenerative agriculture in their wider sustainability strategy, only 36% have quantifiable targets in place, and only 16% mention metrics for measuring progress (FAIRR, 2023). We need to step back and assess what regen ag commitments look like in practice. Interested to join the discussion? ⭐ Our Future of Food and Beverage conference is returning to Amsterdam next May (13-14). Hear from 40+ speakers, including Barbara de Penanster from Danone, Grant Sprick from Ahold Delhaize, Una Hrnjak from ALDI SÜD, Rodolfo De Acutis from Nestlé, Sally Smith from Flora Food Group, Mario Abreu from Ferrero and many more! Just outside Banjul in The Gambia, a group of young people are leading the way in transforming and developing agricultural practices through a demonstration farm. At the farm, they’re proving that climate-smart, organic practices can make crops like papayas, bananas, and pineapples grow locally. This innovation reduces reliance on imports and boosts farmers' incomes. Watch this video to see how this farm is making a difference for farmers like Ousman and Sheikh Tijan.

📹 Dairy Industry Sustainability through Adding Value to Processing Sidestreams The sustainability of the dairy industry is important as it impacts food security, livelihoods, and environmental health. Focusing on processing streams and value addition can enhance sustainability by optimizing resource use, reducing waste, and increasing product diversity & quality. This approach aligns with policies promoting sustainable agriculture, economic growth, and environmental conservation. In addition, innovative processing techniques can boost profitability as well as ensure the welfare of people and the planet and create a resilient and sustainable value chain that benefits all stakeholders. One trend in the Canadian innovation ecosystem that I've been very excited to see accelerate in to a new stage of maturity is a wave of very pragmatic, commercially minded founders tackling some crunchy challenges around decarbonization of our global agricultural supply chain. Some exceptional #Montreal businesses like Aplantex, Opalia, and Ferme GUSH Farm are some great examples and ecosystem contributors like Cycle Momentum are spurring on a generation of builders. 🍁/acc Deloitte's latest piece in collaboration with Canadian Alliance for Net-Zero Agri-Food (CANZA) https://lnkd.in/eB8ejyWa lays out a framework that would further enable the scaling and adoption of these emerging technologies. I'm hopeful to see Canadian founders continue the hard work of building these businesses and take a leadership position in agri-food innovation! 🚀🧬 #innovation #sustainability #cleantech #agritech #biotech

Last week during the SEA Agri-Food Roundtable 2024, we dived into the theme of 'Building Biodiverse & Resilient Food Systems for Asia', with the pressing question : How can the integration of regenerative agriculture system protect our natural resources and biodiversity while supporting human lives and livelihoods? Below are the insights that we discussed during the panel: 🌿 One amongst major challenges to building resilient food systems is the significant drop out of the farmers, particularly small farmers. This issue stems from the ongoing decline in farmers' profit margins due to rising input costs such as fertilizers and seeds, while their incomes from selling produce remain stagnant or showing only marginal increase. Additionally, the unpredictable climate & weather patterns pose risks to crop stability, further exacerbating the situation. 🌿The Regenerative Agriculture practices can help smallholder farmers adapt to climate change, reduce input costs, and achieve more stable yields over time. Consumer interest in sustainably produced foods and their shift to healthy food is increasing, leading to growing demand for products from regenerative agriculture. Smallholder farmers who adopt these practices may be able to command better prices, build direct relationships with consumers through farmers' markets, community-supported agriculture, and online platforms. 🌿Climate Finance Allocation is still insufficient: Only 3% of climate finance is directed towards food systems. Amplifying this investment could result in regenerative and agroecological practices getting into full transition to sustainable practices by 2050. The projected return on this investment is high and promising, resulting to a significant impact on global food security. 🌿The inclusive and collaborative approaches are highly needed: Collaborative dialogue and Collaborative action need to move beyond the business as-usual- mindset to drive #ClimateImpact at scale in our agri-food systems and building resilient food system. Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort from all sectors; including the corporations, government, NGO. Thank you to Yvonne Pinto Deepali Khanna Navarun A. and Paul Ark (Polapat Arkkrapridi) who has also put forward their perspective on building resilient food system in Asia on this panel. Congratulation and thank you to Ren Hua Ho , Hataikan Kamolsirisakul , Anuj Maheshwari and Beverley Postma who have brought together the key leaders in the region to have the critical conversation in this space.
