🌪 Reducing the Impact of Natural Disasters Through Business Action 🌪 Typhoon No. 3 (Typhoon Yagi) left a trail of devastation, reminding us all of the pressing need for businesses to embrace sustainable development strategies to better cope with the realities of climate change. 💡 Natural Disasters Causing Billions in Losses 💡 Quang Ninh was particularly hard-hit, with aquaculture farmers like Ngo Thi Thuy losing investments of VND12 billion, and others suffering even greater financial setbacks. Petrolimex’s fuel stations in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong sustained severe damages, and even large-scale infrastructure like ports and factories were heavily impacted. 🌍 Sustainability Is No Longer Optional 🌍 At the Vietnam Corporate Sustainability Forum 2024, Pham Tan Cong, Chairman of the VCCI, underscored that Typhoon No. 3 is yet another wake-up call. I think Thailand has one of the most breath-taking views!    At the same time, it is also among the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, with a trajectory of greater exposure to variable rainfall, droughts, and floods, as well as sea level rise and coastal erosion among other factors. These impacts challenge Thailand’s path to a more sustainable economy, place further pressure on natural resources and biodiversity, and increase risk of health and economic shocks for the country’s most climate-vulnerable communities. Responding to this threat, Thailand is taking further actions to achieve net zero goals and strengthen climate change resilience, with measures including accelerating Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, drafting national climate change legislation, and evolving the Bio-Circular Green economic model. These measures are strengthening pathways for energy transition and sustainability across economic sectors, while presenting new opportunities for climate-vulnerable communities to benefit from Thailand’s journey toward net zero. The “Advancing Climate Resilient Livelihoods in Thailand” Workshop hosted by Mahidol University in partnership with the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and supported by The Rockefeller Foundation examined these trends, and opportunities for climate resilient livelihoods they present.
