Looking back before setting course for 2025 ✨ 🌿 Sustainability in wine: A luxury or commercial necessity? 🌿 At Vinexposium Wine Paris 2024, we delved into one of the most pressing topics of our industry: #sustainability. With key players such as gatekeepers, monopolies, importers, and retailers now demanding strong sustainability policies, our outstanding panel explored what it takes to meet these expectations: 👥 Amazing chair : Beverly Tabbron MW Justin Howard-Sneyd Simon Mason Eudes Morgan Gad Pettersson This is the first in a series of three posts leading up to the Wine Paris 2025 edition, which will take place from February 10 to 12, 2025. In this first post, we will reflect on the key takeaways from the 2024 edition: 🌱 Understanding sustainable development: Originally defined in the 1987 Brundtland report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," sustainable development has now become central to our sector. 🌍 Key questions explored: What specific sustainability criteria should we consider when selecting wine suppliers? How do we guide wine suppliers who initially do not meet these criteria to improve their practices? How can we support the transition away from chemically-based monocultural agriculture that is detrimental to the soil and local ecosystems, towards regenerative agriculture? How viticulture can be a tool to reverse climate change by working collectively across the supply chain. 🚀 What’s Next? Join us next Tuesday for the second post in this series, where we will focus on concrete actions taken since the conference, and how collaborative efforts or industry-wide initiatives are essential for advancing sustainability in the wine sector. Stay tuned, and let’s continue this important conversation together. 💬 #Wine #Viticulture #Regenerativeagriculture #Climatechange #Wineindustry #Collaboration #Leadership #Winesustainability

🍇 Australia's Wine Industry Leads in Sustainability The 2023 Impact Report from Sustainable Winegrowing Australia showcases notable advancements in sustainable practices within the Australian wine sector. A significant 41% of this year's total wine tonnage was certified sustainable, covering 32% of total vineyard area. The report highlights an exponential increase in certifications compared to 2020, with over ten times more wineries and over eight times more vineyards achieving sustainability certification. 🌱 Certification and Consumer Trust Enhancing Market Presence Mardi Longbottom of the Australian Wine Research Institute emphasized the growing trend of sustainability in the wine industry, driven by consumer demand and ethical commitments. The Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Trust Mark, now featured on an equivalent of 96.1 million bottles of wine, authenticates sustainability claims, which is crucial as 53% of global wine consumers trust only officially certified sustainability claims, according to the IWSR SOLA Report. 🌍 Commitment to Long-Term Environmental Goals The industry is not only expanding its sustainable practices but also pioneering in innovations like alternative varieties and eco-friendly packaging, such as the 'bagnum' format by Duxton Vineyards’ Rewild. Sustainable Winegrowing Australia’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 aligns with its 42% emissions reduction target by 2030, reflecting a substantial commitment to environmental stewardship across nearly 85% of Australia’s wine regions. #SustainableWine #EcoFriendly #WineIndustry #AustraliaWine #SustainabilityGoals

Interesting article on some of the challenges facing the wine business regarding its impact on climate change. With bottle weights accounting for up to 60% of a wine’s carbon footprint, it's important that wine producers move to lighter bottles and the wine trade and retailers educate consumers to follow them.
Did you know up to 60% of wine's carbon footprint comes from the making of and transportation in glass bottles? Catena Zapata and Dr. Laura Catena with the help of Verallia, have released their first Malbec bottling that is 40% lighter, with more wines to follow soon. Winebow is proud to offer this more sustainable option to our customers. The next step will be education of both trade and consumers, so we are grateful to Erica Duecy for this fantastic article. #sustainability #packaginginnovation #wineindustry https://lnkd.in/edsgszTU

Albeit very late to the party, it's good to finally see wine companies reducing their bottle weights. It's been a long time coming, especially in the USA, South America and parts of Europe. A heavy bottle does not improve wine quality and frankly heavy bottles are a problem on multiple fronts, including health and safety and consumers hesitation to purchase. It's a welcomed move by Catena Zapata and Dr. Laura Catena with the hope more wineries will follow. However Forbes you should also be applauding those wineries who have been progressive on the lightweight bottle front and led the way. Most New Zealand and Australian wine companies have been using a 415-407g bottle for more than a decade now. 2024 also sees AU/NZ rolling into the 380g. #sustainability #winebusiness #carbonreduction #nzwine #australianwine
