An interesting day of discussion yesterday at AJ Retrofit 2024. Highlights included a presentation of David Chipperfield’s LSE Firoz Lalji Global Hub, where it was great to see one of the profession’s big hitters pushing their new approach to reuse, moving beyond heritage and conservation concerns to protecting buildings for their ‘material quality and physical capital’ – of course a very normal part of contextual design, but something of a conundrum for the planning framework, we were told. Here is the first prototype of the Urban Responsive Grid I have been recently working on, which showcases the adaptive capabilities of design, crafted to respond to varying urban landscapes and environmental conditions. The goal is to foster more resilient and efficient urban spaces that can dynamically adjust to their inhabitants needs.
