💧 French waters earn a European record. On 15 May, France’s Minister Delegate for Energy, Roland Lescure, announced the results of the world’s first-ever commercial-scale floating wind auction. The operation put up a single 250 MW quota for construction off the coast of southern Brittany. And as the WindEurope industry association points out today, it is a milestone for this technology segment. At least at European level. Currently the old continent houses only small pilot plants and demonstration projects equipped with floating wind turbines. In other words, the European offshore fleet remains firmly anchored to wind generators with fixed foundations, despite ambitious national planning. “The floating wind is here to stay“, commented Pierre Tardieu, Chief Policy Officer of WindEurope. “The demonstration projects worked. Now it’s time to move on to the large ones. The French auction represented a milestone in the history of floating wind technology, placing France among the leading countries” of the sector. #SENnews #environmnent #globalwarming #greeneconomy #solar #eolic #energy #greenenergy #solarenergy #windenergy #sustainable #sustainabledevelopment

After a breakthrough year for wave energy with the CorPower Ocean C4 weathering the biggest storm waves recorded in northern Portugal and powering the Portuguese grid, it was great to be back at Lisbon Energy Summit. I had the honour of sharing the stage with Anne Marit Glette Hansen of Equinor, Jon Salazar of Gazelle Wind Power Limited, Ana Isabel Pirrone of OWC and Francisco Correia da Fonseca of WavEC - Offshore Renewables, for a lively discussion on co-located wind+wave farms, scale-up, permitting and supply chains. Visibility on policy, permitting and revenue schemes is critical to capture this massive opportunity. With the right conditions we can develop a thriving offshore energy industry to benefit the economy of coastal regions while meeting climate and energy security goals of Portugal. It was a great honour to meet with Minister for Environment and Energy Maria Da Graça Carvalho to discuss wave energy and our R&D efforts out of Viana do Castelo. #waveenergy #offshorewind #hydrid #colocation #innovation

🚀 ECORES WIND is set to make significant strides in the wind energy sector by advancing the development of sustainable materials and processes. 🌟 Wind farms have a finite operational lifetime. For the oldest wind farms this is typically in the area of 15 – 25 years. As the European wind turbine fleet ages, a solution for EoL is paramount. Many of Europe’s onshore wind farms are approaching the end of their planned operational lifetime. 🎯 The key objective of ECORES WIND is the development of circular resin systems that enhance the recyclability and sustainability of wind turbine blades and incorporation of advanced disassembly strategies to ensure that wind turbine blades can be decommissioned, and their materials reused efficiently. Read more about our initiative here: https://lnkd.in/dJW8JvrD #HorizonEU #ECORESWIND #resins #composites #circularity #windblades #windenergy #sustainability This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No. 101148066.

Some interesting discussions during a meeting and briefing with the German Ambassador to Ireland Cord Meier-Klodt in Cork two years ago – the pace of acceleration and deployment especially regarding floating offshore wind has not necessarily kept abreast of ambitions and forecasts at the time – there are still some catalytic actions and inputs required… Specifically policy and regulation change, and better access to finance. Some of these elements I am now working on with colleagues to change – namely the more readily available access to finance for deserving projects with real potential to reduce carbon emissions. With its long coastlines and strong wind resources, the country holds great potential for offshore wind #energy. However, recent developments have highlighted significant challenges like a complex permitting system and national security issues. In November 2023, the Swedish government rejected 13 offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea, citing defense concerns. Meanwhile, Sweden is transitioning from a developer-led system to a government-led system for offshore wind, aiming to better coordinate the #permitting process while addressing both security and #environmental considerations.
