Stories are the windows into the tapestry of our heart. They bring light to the moments and meaning we attribute to them. My father loved sharing his. The teachers who inspired my life offered theirs in hopes of sparking wisdom and love. We may fade away as someone is repeating a tale that we have heard before. How I wish to hear my dad tell his again and again. There is an assumption that there will always be time to listen. The sand in the hourglass of life tells us otherwise. When we understand the preciousness of our brief visits with one another, we lean to hear more deeply. There will be many stories shared on this Thanksgiving. One of the ways we can express our gratitude is through the invitation for someone to tell us theirs. There will be those kept hidden in the heart for fear that it won't be safe to share. We change that experience in the moments we show that we care. Perhaps it is a story of loss that lives in the shadows. It may also be one of triumph. When we inquire about how someone is doing and mean it, we create a space of freedom. We may choose to be mindful of the stories we tell that perpetuate our suffering. When we entrench ourselves in victimhood, we can obstruct the traction of healing. Stories can also keep us frozen in time and emotional space. When we bring the light of truth to them, we discover new ways to hold and tell it. The power of our authenticity can awaken the transparency of someone else's pain. These are the tender moments of a shared story. We are so deeply connected in the places we all recognize. Our spontaneous tears reveal the vulnerability that lives in each heart. This holiday season provides us with opportunities to share a story of how someone touched our life. We may never have told them. In this season of lights, let us share the warmth of them through our heartfelt presence. Let us extend an invitation to those harboring stories in their soul that live in silence. We can embody the story of kindness in the moments we offer the generosity of our spirit. At the heart of Thanksgiving is love.
