Today, I complete 2 months in my new role. The new role along with it brought not just a #newproject, a #newteam, a #newdomain but also an additional responsibility. The responsibility of being a “#People’sManager” With little to no experience of #managingpeople except for handholding new team members, this was an #opportunity I was looking forward to. Turns out that there is a team of 10+ young techies who I will be working with. Enthusiastic folks who are nearly freshers, free-spirited with contagious energies! Though I knew that this was going to be a great #learningopportunity, I was not pre-empting much and wanted to cross the bridge as it comes! Having spent these 2 months, I have realized that #managingteam (a BIG team) brings multitude of aspects that one has to take care including - - #Advanceplanning of weekly/fortnightly team #deliverables keeping larger picture in mind - Ensuring that work is allocated to each member (Biggest #challenge in such big teams) - Given that each member has a different #skillset, setting right #expectations in your mind - Ensuring each member has a clarity on their deliverable (else they are lost and may never reach out to you out of hesitance) - Ensuring that all of them #feelheard One of the trickiest aspects is to be #empathetic and treat each member as a human first and a company resource later (this gets tested when there is a harsh deadline to honor) I have always felt that #leadingteam is like raising a child! How, you may ask? Like how a child picks up what their family members actually do instead of what they just #preach, team members get influenced by true #workethic of their seniors rather than what is just preached. Transition Tip Tuesday #3 – DO OR DO NOT. THERE IS NO TRY For fans of Star Wars, you all know when Yoda utters these words to Luke. They’ve been plastered on everything from mugs to t-shirts and I’m sure even inked onto some skin in who knows what location. Wise words to live by. So, what does this have to do with my transition tip? I’m glad you asked… here’s what. Skill bridge. Two words that seem to illicit so much drama across all military branches these days. Whether you are for or against truly doesn’t matter. If you already retired/separated and didn’t have or use a skill bridge program and you were successful in your transition, great. I am very happy for you. If you used one and it worked out, likewise, I am happy for you. This post is meant for someone who is eligible and considering a skill bridge so here’s my advice…. Simply put, follow Yoda’s guidance. If you decide to participate in a skill bridge, CHOOSE WISELY. You only have to speak to a handful of veterans to find several who thought they were getting one thing in a skill bridge and ended up getting a completely different thing. To some extent, that’s understandable because after all, we don’t know what we don’t know, and I would argue those individuals learned something in that skill bridge even if it wasn't the something they thought. To minimize the chances of being surprised, try to apply this metric: If the company you’re skill bridging with was able to offer you a job on day 2 of your “internship” and it meets all of your requirements (compensation, location, position, etc) will you take it? If you can’t say hell yes, maybe choose another skill bridge or DO NOT. Bottom line – if you’re approved to participate in a skill bridge, make sure it’s with a company and an industry you truly believe you could be happy working in and for. Do your research, talk to people in the company and industry, talk to people who used to work for the company and ask them why they left. If you don’t have a good feel for the company, I would recommend finding a different opportunity. We can argue the benefits and pitfalls of skill bridge until the cows come home but the fact remains that the military created the programs for a reason, or several reasons. Perhaps it was considered part of a solution to stymie the growing trend of problems with Veterans post separation/retirement (dependency, homelessness, violence, suicide, etc). If even one transitioning military service member was able to avoid these problems because of a skill bridge, then the program is validated in my opinion. Enough said… Question – Skill bridge complete or not, what would you recommend to someone considering an “internship” with a company?  

𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 🚀 When I first started preparing for DSA and system design interviews, I thought my strong technical background would be enough. Little did I know, the journey would be filled with challenges and failures. 😓 I remember my first few interviews clearly. I was excited and prepared, ready to solve any problem. But when the questions began, my confidence shook. I stumbled, doubted myself, and didn't make it through. ❌ Instead of giving up, I chose to see each failure as a learning opportunity. Here's how I turned my setbacks into success: → 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 📝: After each interview, I took detailed notes on where I went wrong. This helped me identify my weaknesses and focus on improving them. → 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 🔄: I dedicated a specific time each day to practice DSA problems and system design concepts. Platforms like LeetCode and AlgoTutor Academy were my go-to resources. → 𝗠𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 🎤: I participated in mock interviews with peers and mentors. This not only helped me get used to the pressure but also provided valuable feedback. → 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 🌟: Maintaining a positive mindset was crucial. I reminded myself that every failure was a step closer to my goal. After months of dedication and hard work, I started seeing improvements. My confidence grew, and so did my problem-solving skills. Eventually, I received offers from both Google and Oracle. 🎉 To everyone preparing for their dream job interviews, remember this: Failure is not the end. It's just a part of the journey. Keep pushing, keep learning, and don't let setbacks define you. If it resonates with you, give it a try. Having completed our #ALX Virtual Assistant training, it’s time to focus on mastering the tools we rushed through. We were often trying to meet deadlines and milestones, so we didn’t get the chance to truly dive deep into everything we learned. Now’s the time to go back to Savannah and study the tools step by step. You don’t need to learn everything at once— Just pick a few key tools in areas like project management, customer relations, etc. Additionally, reach out for internships and hands-on experience. Apply for jobs and learn on the go. Growth happens with real-world practice. Nobody has it all figured out from the start. You can learn while doing, and it’s okay to grow as you work. I want to spotlight two wonderful ladies in our community who are setting an example already: -Amarachukwu Ozoagu: She is an absolute burst of positivity, with energy and a smile that are contagious. She’s committed to learning one tool per week, and her approach is inspiring. Let’s follow her journey—she’s doing amazing things, and it’s worthwhile to connect with her. -Munirat Asubiaro, whom I call the 𝙩𝙤𝙥-𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙚𝙣 has already started sharing her knowledge of tools like Trello and other CRM tools. She’s been conducting classes and sharing recorded sessions that have been incredibly helpful for us all. Her dedication to teaching and learning is something we can all benefit from. The essence of all this is that we should 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧, learn together, and grow as a community. Then, my Preplaced mentor , made a personalized roadmap for me that covers: 👉🏻 Both long-term and short-term goals 👉🏻 List of resources and tools 👉🏻 Top quality projects He shared this golden tip with me: Use the time-boxing technique to follow goals and build a routine ✅ With this technique, I set my goals, work on them for 25 minutes and then take break for 5 minutes. But as I faced new challenges, it became clear that something vital was missing. The 3MTT program is a solution to this while reshaping not just my career but my mindset. My 3MTT Story There was a defining moment during one of our group projects that I’ll never forget. A disagreement erupted just days before a major presentation, threatening to derail everything we had worked on. Tensions were high, and it felt like the team was on the brink of collapse. But something shifted. Instead of letting the conflict spiral, we leaned into active listening. Each person’s concerns were heard and addressed with empathy, and what could have been a disaster turned into a powerful success. It was in that moment I realized that effective communication and emotional intelligence were just as critical as any technical skill. This experience, nurtured in the physical applied learning cluster, profoundly enhanced my ability to collaborate under pressure. The Essential Soft Skills I Learnt Through 3MTT, I gained a toolkit of invaluable soft skills that reshaped how I approach work: 1. Effective Communication: More than just speaking clearly, it’s about listening actively, reading the room, and adjusting your message to suit diverse audiences. 2.
