I am happy to share insights from the recent Focus Group Discussion (FGD) held on September 24, 2024, at the IPB International Convention Center in Bogor. This gathering focused on the theme "Enhancing Forest Productivity for Multi-Enterprise Forestry: Strategies and Challenges." The FGD brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from IPB University, the World Bank, the Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association (APHI), the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), as well as leading companies in the forestry sector. The primary objective was to explore effective strategies for increasing forest productivity while addressing the challenges posed by multi-enterprise forestry. This approach integrates various economic activities within forest areas, such as agroforestry, commercial tree planting, ecotourism, and non-timber forest product utilization. Forests play a critical role in global ecosystems by providing raw materials, biodiversity, climate regulation, and ecosystem services. The need for sustainable forest management has never been more pressing, especially in the context of multi-enterprise utilization. The strategies presented included a.o. 1) emphasizing the integration of advanced technologies to enhance productivity, 2) exploring new ways to manage forest resources efficiently and 3) encouraging the development of various forest products to meet market demands. Despite the promising strategies, several challenges were highlighted: a) balancing various interests in land use remains a significant hurdle, b) addressing the uncertainties brought about by climate change is crucial for sustainable practices and c) fluctuations in market demand can hinder investment in sustainable forestry practices. The discussions underscored the importance of stakeholder collaboration to identify solutions that balance economic interests with ecological sustainability. As we move forward, we must continue these dialogues and implement strategies that will lead to productive and sustainable forest management practices. #latepost #sustainability #sustainableforestmanagement

Sometimes, the best way to innovate is to look back to how things have been done historically. That's why we've replaced the fossil gas that removes oxygen in the anode furnace with logs from certified sustainable forestry. 🪵 What makes this approach more sustainable than using gas? Since December 2023, we have been SURE-certified and can trace the wood back to where it comes from: The tree trunks we use are sourced locally in Austria and Germany to minimize transport emissions, and the areas are reforested, maintaining biological diversity. 💡 Did you know that the term "sustainability" and its guiding principles originated in forestry? More than 300 years ago, a German scientist published a book advocating the conservation, growing, and use of wood in a continuing, stable, and sustained manner. This was the first documented use of the German term for sustainability, "Nachhaltigkeit". 🌳 HUSK BIOSPHERE RESERVES - Logging vs. Sustainable Forest Management: Can they coexist? 🌲 Every Christmas holiday season, many of us ask: Should I go with a cut pine tree or explore eco-friendlier alternatives? Can forestry balance logging with sustainability? This is not a question for Pilis Park Forestry (Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt.): managing 60,000 hectares of state forest land, the company has embraced sustainable solutions in forest management for years. Through the “Integrated Forest Management” pilot under the HUSK Biosphere Reserves project, the company takes further steps to preserve biodiversity while actively managing forests. Here’s how they are making a difference: 🌿 Stepping-Stones: Conserving patches of forest with high ecological value, excluding them from timber production. 🌳 Habitat Trees: Protecting old, large trees to support diverse ecosystems and reach their natural lifespan. 🌿 Deadwood Preservation: Maintaining deadwood to improve microclimates, water retention, and carbon storage. Together with the @Municipality of Pilisborosjenő, the company is piloting community-managed continuous cover forest management (CCF) practices to create a sustainable, mixed-age forest for generations to come. BURST participates in the pilot as a knowledge facilitator, developing the action plan and incorporating the pilot's experiences into a joint methodological guide for biosphere reserves. Sustainability isn’t just about the holidays – it should be a year-round commitment to our planet. 💚 #SustainableForestry #PilisParkForestry #Biodiversity #IntegratedForestManagement #HUSKBiosphereReserves #CCF #InterregHungarySlovakia #BURST #BURSTgroup #Pilisborosjenő

It is truly an honor to host the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), especially as they have decided to establish a tangible presence in Romania. It is an excellent choice, and I congratulate everyone involved, particularly Mihai and Alexandra, whom I know personally and appreciate. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to fulfill various roles related to the FSC standard for forest management – from being audited and an auditor to a standards developer. I have grown professionally alongside the process of integrating FSC concepts into national legislation, including aspects such as deadwood, aging islands, and high conservation value forests (HCVF). Public debate, consultation, transparency, and involvement are fundamental principles for aligning the Romanian forestry system with FSC standards. The credibility of the FSC system is essential in a polarized world, where the role of forestry is often misunderstood, and the willingness to understand it diminishes as some people hijack "truths." The role of local communities and unifying their voice are also vital to balancing the three essential components concerning forests: environmental, economic, and social. Achieving consensus remains a major challenge, as we have observed in the debate on the Forestry Code, a national project following the National Forest Strategy. Resource traceability is becoming a global challenge, not just for wood, and we must be prepared to face these challenges. National projects, such as the New Forestry Code and substantial funding through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) for afforestation, digitalization, and the development of Sumal 3.0, are important steps towards transparency and sustainability. In the context of widespread distrust in governments and authorities, the role of voluntary standards is becoming increasingly relevant. Let us continue to work together for a sustainable and responsible future for our forests.

I have already posted on this issue and share the same concerns as Professor Lindenmayer. Despite Forestry Australia’s assertions I have yet to see a peer reviewed published detailed methodology. There is already an accepted methodology (not perfect!) for plantations. The great challenge for native forests is genuine additionallity very hard to demonstrate when native forests have been significantly over-harvested for so long. The kinds of measures being proposed, in the absence of any details, is simply best practice businesses as usual. Making a carbon virtue of simply managing more sustainably doesn’t make up for the losses already present in the atmosphere. Telling the atmosphere it won’t see an emission is simply magical thinking of which there is already far too much of eg CCS.

Sharing my latest piece published in The Conversation: "Industry push to earn carbon credits from Australia’s native forests would be a blow for nature and the climate." Australia’s forestry industry recently proposed plans to remove trees from native forests, potentially including national parks, and claim carbon credits. While the industry claims this would make ecosystems more resilient and help tackle climate change, decades of research suggest the opposite. Scientific evidence indicates that such practices can make forests more fire-prone, undermine forest health, and release carbon that would negate any climate benefits. Additionally, further declines in biodiversity and increased risks to our emissions-reduction goals are unacceptable outcomes. 🌿 Key Points: ◾ Logging and certain "adaptive harvesting" practices can increase fire risk and damage ecosystems. ◾ The proposal’s methods may not provide the claimed climate benefits and could instead exacerbate emissions. ◾ We must prioritise genuine, evidence-based approaches to forest management that protect biodiversity and contribute to climate resilience. Australia cannot afford to jeopardise its environmental and climate goals with misguided forestry practices. I encourage you to read the full article and join the conversation about how we can better protect our native forests and our planet 📖 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gSMtFmDQ Thank you for your support in amplifying expert voices and promoting sustainable forest management. #ClimateChange #Forestry #Conservation #Biodiversity #SustainableFarms
