Last year, the Montana Office of Consumer Protection prevented Montanans from losing $526,000 to scammers and recovered $267,000 for customers who filed business complaints. A total potential loss of $770,000 was reported to OCP by individuals who were targeted by scammers but did not pay them. Protect yourself and loved ones from scammers by using common sense and doing your due diligence: be skeptical, ask around, and never give money to someone you don't know. Montanans can report any phone, email, or mail scams to the Montana Department of Justice’s Office of Consumer Protection at contactocp@mt.gov, or 406-444-4500 (toll-free: 800-481-6896), or online at dojmt.gov/consumer.

When we hear about an MC that has double brokered or stolen a load of freight, we still vet that carrier before we put them on The Bannon Report websites DNU list. This is how we learn about the latest fraud techniques they are using. Quite often while vetting those reported, we find other MC associations that require vetting, and often, those associations meet the criteria to be a concern. TBR users will recognize those carriers with a recommendation of "Thoroughly vet if planning to use this carrier". Over the last year, our list of reported fraud, and MCs labeled "Thoroughly Vet", has grown to over 11,000 MC #'s. And many of those "Thoroughly Vet" have become, "Double Broker Incident Reported". Sometimes, we find enough about a new carrier to skip the "Thoroughly Vet" recommendation and send them right to the DNU pile.
