Happy Haitian Heritage Month!!!!! Here are some amazing facts about Haiti 1. Haiti was “discovered” by Christopher Columbus in 1492 (although it was already inhabited by a native tribe now known as Taino) 2. Haiti was the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery with its 1804 successful revolution against Napoleon’s French armies (but what happens afterwards is for a whole other post though) 3. Voodoo is an officially recognized religion in Haiti 4. Haiti is the most mountainous country in the Caribbean with mountain peaks reaching over 8,000 feet and the name Haiti comes from the word Ayiti meaning ‘Land of Mountains’ given by the Taino people 5. Haiti has the world’s largest solar powered hospital, Hospital Universitaire De Mirebalais 6. Haiti has surviving cave paintings from the Taino people; these paintings are now adopted as national symbols and serve as one of the country’s most unique tourist attractions 7. French and Creole are the official languages in Haiti (sak passe tout moun) 8. "The Citadelle" is the largest mountaintop fortress in the Western Hemisphere and is located on top of Haiti's mountain Bonnet a L’Eveque 9. In Haiti, only one partner needs to be present for a divorce to take place (ain’t that something???) 10. Haiti has one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the Caribbean with over 5600 living plant species and is home to endangered mammal species 11. Tourism is one of the largest industries in Haiti 12. We have some of the best food and people in the world (OK just my personal opinion but seriously have you tried our Haitian cuisine yet? Do you have any Haitian friends lol -- If not, find some today or soon 😊) source: www.demandafrica.com #HaitianCulture #HaitianLaidiesNetwork #Haiti #Ayiti #May #HaitianHeritageMonth #DEI

Nubia, the Black side of Egypt 🇪🇬 Nubia once stretched south from Aswan, to modern day Khartoum, Sudan. Aswan is a city in Egypt located in the southern part of the country, on the east bank of the Nile River. Aswan is not a city that is exclusively populated by Nubian people, but it is an important city in the region with a significant Nubian population. The Nubian people are an ethnic group indigenous to the region of Nubia, which is located in present-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan. Historically, Nubians have their own distinct culture, language, and traditions. In Aswan, you can find Nubian villages like Gharb Seheil and Elephantine Island where many Nubian people live. Nubian culture is vibrant in Aswan, and visitors can experience Nubian music, dance, crafts, and cuisine in the city. Aswan is known for its beautiful landscapes, ancient monuments like the Aswan High Dam and Philae Temple, as well as its vibrant markets and traditional Nubian villages. The Nubian people have a rich cultural heritage, and their presence in Aswan adds to the city's unique character. For Nubians whose dark African skin sets them apart in mostly Arab Egypt, such treatment is nothing new to them. #egypt #nubia #nubian #travel #travels #africa #Africans

Binagwaho, A., Ngarambe, B., & Mathewos, K. (2022). Eliminating the white supremacy mindset from global health education. Annals of Global Health, 88(1). Abstract: The term “decolonization” has been increasingly used to refer to the elimination of the colonial experience and its legacy. However, the use of this overarching term masks the real root of the problem. European countries, whose populations are majority white, used their assumed supremacy as justification for the colonization of current low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where the majority of non-white people live. This clear overlap between geographic and skin color differences explains how the white supremacy ideology triggered European colonization. Therefore, calls to decolonize global health education must focus on the roots of colonization and fight for the elimination of white supremacy ideology that is one of the pillars of the current ills of our global health architecture. A step in this process acknowledging the expertise that emerges from LMICs, alongside challenging the traditional high-income country (HIC) hegemony over knowledge and strengthening universities in LMICs to provide quality medical and global health education. Additionally, we also need to reevaluate curricula, research selection, and design as well as partnerships. Students need to be equipped with the skills to question norms and contribute to the creation of equitable, mutually beneficial partnerships. This needs to be accompanied by the adoption of transdisciplinary education to address critical societal challenges. By challenging the white supremacy ideology, we can shift the center of gravity in global health to respect the right to equal say in education and research according to the disease burden and the distribution of the world population.
Passionate about seeing the Alkebulan of my dream emerge. I am unapologetically African. We are building the Emerging Alkebulan. Titles don't matter. Disrupting the status quo. Thought provoker. Pan African to the core.
This rings so true as to what's happening on our continent today. We've become gatekeepers of the system, hence they don't have to be there physically any longer, because they've got our minds. We turned against ourselves to embrace cultures and ideologies that are not ours. Since then things have fallen apart. Chinua Achebe's timeless classic, he saw what no one could see many years ago. Eyes that look are common, but eyes that see are rare 👌🏾 While most of us looked, he could see what was to come. When you lose your identity and culture to embrace what's not authentically us. Unfortunately we've become prone to accepting everything that's thrown at us, instead of being authentically Alkebulan 😕 😪 #Africa #Alkebulan #Africadiaspora #thingsfallapart #AlkebulanAwakening #AlkebulanRenaissance

TUAREG PEOPLE. The Tuareg People: Desert Nomads and Masters of the Sahara The Tuareg people, also known as the Kel Tamasheq, are a Berber ethnic group that inhabits the Sahara desert region of North Africa. For centuries, they have been a nomadic people, known for their mastery of the desert environment and their distinctive culture and traditions. The Tuareg are renowned for their unique style of dress, which includes indigo-dyed garments known as tagelmust, which men often wear to cover their faces. The Tuareg society is traditionally organized into clans and tribes, with a strong emphasis on kinship and honor. They are also known for their elaborate system of oral history, passed down through generations of storytellers known as iggawen. The Tuareg have long been involved in trans-Saharan trade, carrying goods such as salt, gold, and slaves across the desert on camel caravans. In recent decades, however, they have faced numerous challenges, including the encroachment of modern civilization and the effects of drought and desertification on their traditional way of life. Despite these challenges, the Tuareg people have retained much of their distinctive culture and traditions, including their unique language, Tamasheq, which is spoken by around 2 million people across the Sahara region. In recent years, the Tuareg have been at the center of a number of political and military conflicts, including the Tuareg rebellion in Mali in 2012 and ongoing tensions between Tuareg separatists and the governments of Mali, Niger, and other countries in the region.
