Unfortunately companies do not always see this as a value, beyond getting them back to the real estate they have invested in.
The real problem continues to be companies and management themselves no longer having loyalty to employees as long term investments as they had in the past. This significantly accelerated in the late 20th century during the 1980s and 1990s with deregulation allowing access to capital markets for private companies to go public through IPOs over time starting with the 1980s.
The result is a lack of continuity with management, company reinvestment and frankly ownership with companies flipping thru private equity groups that have little investment in long term employee culture and engagement beyond how to capitalize the business over a short interval to turn a profit.
And honestly all the unassigned work areas and desking and open plans and lounge-like work areas do is reinforce the lack of commitment by employers to their employees when everything is temporary, interchangeable, open, unassigned and thus depersonalized. Employers should be of no surprise that younger employees have minimal commitment to the companies or their mantras.
Add to that the lack of privacy, and an expectation of continual accessibility to employees required by management it is no wonder employees prefer to work at home, because as their jobs come and go, and the companies themselves come and go, at least the home workplace provides them a sense of security, privacy and continuity that is lacking in most professional environments and management strategies.
This will change when there is a fundamental shift in how businesses are managed and take a long term view of return on investment in both themselves and their employees. Give them a true, dependable, secure work home and family, and they won't need to stay home to feel secure themselves knowing they may have a place to grow, instead of some unassigned bench or sofa.
