📢 Attention Rondo Community‼️ 📢 Yesterday, the Star Tribune published an article by Our Street Minneapolis discussing i94 and the #RONDO neighborhood. Just two days prior, Asian Media Access released an article about the new Sears development, which includes a RONDO mall on the first floor. Surprisingly, none of us from the Rondo community have been consulted about these developments. This land is originally Rondo descendant land, as it was initially an army base where Quonset Huts for black families resided before the Sears development. This land belongs to the Rondo Community Covenant! It’s concerning to see organizations trying to leverage and capitalize on our families’ lineage and history without involving US in the conversation. Now more than ever, it’s crucial for us to show up and control the narrative. We can’t afford to sit back and watch others use our history for their own benefits. Moreover, the developers and consultants behind this project, such as Kimley-Horn , Seritage, and S9, along with Cedarleaf Dahl, have a history of gentrifying neighborhoods. They are just money-hungry organizations that are not working for the best interests of communities. If they want our voice, we need to ask ourselves, what are we getting in return? Let’s come together, raise our voices, and demand our rightful place in these discussions. Huge Thank You to some of our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Phoenix, the Hogan family and friends, and Bluprint Music Group who came out to Saturday morning's Community Clean-Up project! They cleaned up Roosevelt St. from 7th Ave to 19th Ave, in honor of Kenny "Fanatic" Hogan! They picked up over 14 BAGS OF TRASH in an hour and a half! A testament to their commitment and dedication. Showcasing the impact you can make in the community by simply volunteer 1-2 hours a week. These Community Clean-Up projects are conducted multiple times each month, and our team will rotate around to different parts of the Phoenix area, to clean up streets, neighborhoods, and parks. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. Some research even shows that a nice-looking neighborhood promotes good behavior. If you know of any parks or neighborhoods that could use some beautification, simply comment below! Building Bridges: Healing the Wounds of Black Wall Street The bombings of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921, remain a tragic chapter in American history, highlighting the necessity for continual development and change in society through actionable plans and steps. 😢 This horrific event, which saw the destruction of a prosperous African American community by a white mob, underscores the urgent need to address systemic racism, inequality, and injustice that continue to plague our nation. In the aftermath of such tragedies, it becomes imperative for individuals and communities to come together, harnessing their individual strengths, abilities, and ethical responsibilities to enact meaningful change. 💪🏽 First and foremost, the bombings of Black Wall Street serve as a stark reminder of the enduring legacy of racial violence and discrimination in America. It underscores the importance of confronting the root causes of systemic racism and working towards a more equitable and inclusive society for all. 😔 This requires actionable plans and steps that address structural inequalities in education, employment, housing, and criminal justice, while also fostering dialogue, empathy, and understanding across racial divides. 🌟 It's crucial for every citizen to be actively involved in these efforts, not just first responders, as we all have a role to play in creating a more just society. Moreover, the bombings of Black Wall Street highlight the power of collective action and community resilience in the face of adversity. In the aftermath of the tragedy, survivors and their descendants rebuilt their community from the ashes, demonstrating the strength and determination of the human spirit. This resilience underscores the importance of empowering individuals and communities to take ownership of their futures, advocate for their rights, and actively participate in the processes of social and economic change. 💖 Each citizen's involvement is vital in ensuring that communities can heal and rebuild together. Here's the tea on what happened after #Juneteenth: Although General Order No. 3 was an important milestone, slavery didn't truly end that day. While it promised Black Texans equal rights, it also told them to stay on plantations as "employees." The formerly enslaved were encouraged to sign labor contracts with their former enslavers, leading to sharecropping — a system that often trapped Black folx in debt and poverty. Despite these challenges, freedpeople persisted during the Reconstruction period (1865-1874). They voted, organized, demanded fair wages, educated themselves, worshiped freely, and held political office. However, increasing violence and diminishing opportunities led many to establish their own communities, known as Freedman's Towns or Freedom Colonies. Between 1865 and 1930, over 500 Freedom Colonies were established across East Texas. These colonies provided safe havens where African Americans could reunite with loved ones and escape debt bondage and violence. One notable community was the Tenth Street Historic District in #Dallas, #Texas. The settlement expanded as freedpeople purchased lots and built beautiful bungalow and craftsman-style homes. This area became a hub for social, political, and economic organizing. Excluded from white society, families here created a vibrant world of their own. They built their own economy with Black-owned businesses providing essential services and social spaces. As the nation's largest and most-intact Freedman's Town, Tenth Street offers a rare view into Dallas's past and highlights the resilience of Black American communities everywhere. Our work continues to document, preserve, and amplify Tenth Street's rich history. Did you know that most Black children in the United States are more likely to live in neighborhoods that lack resources associated with a healthy childhood and well-being (sidewalks, parks, community centers, libraries) ? These resources, or “protective community resources” are defined as community-level characteristics, conditions, or assets that safeguard against the effects of risks on children and youth, thereby supporting their overall development And in the south… the region with the highest concentration of Black children and families… Black children have the lowest reported access to protective community resources.
