Going For A Quantum Walk Quantum walks are a promising area of research with potential applications in various fields. Researchers such as Zhan have been working on realizing quantum routing based on controllable perfect state transfer via discrete time quantum walks. Companies and institutions are also involved in this field, with advancements being made in integrated quantum photonics systems. Quantum walk algorithms can be used for network routing, social network analysis, community detection, and information propagation modeling. For example, a coin driven Hadamard quantum walk model was proposed to identify important edges of undirected complex networks and was deployed in a dynamic complex network involving unmanned aerial vehicle communications. Key individuals such as Zhan and companies are making progress in this field, with potential for practical applications in the near future. This week's #innovatorspotlight is Professor Daniel Lidar, director of the University of Southern California Quantum Computing Center at the Information Science Institute. Lidar has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Chemistry since 2005. Before his time at USC, Lidar was a faculty member at the University of Toronto. Since 1995, he has worked in quantum computing, which focuses on harnessing the power of qubits to solve complex problems much faster than traditional computers. 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 Researchers showed that quantum computing could enable moving devices, like drones, to coordinate efficiently by sharing quantum information, even without direct communication. A study from the University of Kent reveals that quantum information could potentially be utilized to synchronize the movements of mobile devices like drones and autonomous vehicles. This could lead to more efficient logistics, which could make deliveries cheaper, and better use of limited bandwidth for the likes of self-driving cars. By carrying out ‘real world’ experiments on a quantum computer, the team of quantum physicists (led by PhD student Josh Tucker in the University of Kent’s School of Physics and Astronomy), found that if the two devices share a pair of quantum coins (qubits), the devices can continue to influence each other even after they have been separated and can no longer communicate. The experiments simulated the phenomenon using real qubits inside a quantum computer developed by IBM. The qubits are made of superconducting material and kept at temperatures colder than the interstellar void. This allows them to behave according to the laws of quantum physics that defy common sense – including the ability to influence each other without coming into contact and without sending signals.

For 25 years, on-board digital processing has been implemented using MCUs, DSPs, FPGAs and ASICs, offering increasing levels of performance, resources and throughput: all these technologies are based on conventional computing techniques and memory interfaces, however, traditional architectures are handicapping the demand for higher performance due to memory-bandwidth constraints and power consumption. Future applications require significantly more on-board processing on increasing amounts of data in real-time, autonomously and intelligently, for data-extensive applications, e.g. machine learning, space-domain awareness and AI-enabled, ultra-high-definition video processing. Associative Compute-In-Memory is based on parallel processing and high-speed SRAM technology, where data is stored and processed directly within the memory, eliminating the need to retrieve data from off-chip storage using complex interfaces. Associative Compute-In-Memory On-Board Processing stores information in a highly parallelized and distributed manner, allowing for simultaneous processing of multiple data elements leading to faster results. Information is searched based on its content or relationships, without the need for addressing, and this natural access makes it easier to explore and analyse complex data sets, discover patterns and derive insights without the constraints of traditional storage.
