In preparation for the ICSSPE webinar tonight on Olympism and Olympic Education, I have been reading up on the concept as its what I am going to do my masters on. Ill be looking at the relevance of Olympic Value Education in South African schools or something along those lines. Below is an article on the life and thinking of the man who brought to life the Modern Olympic Games Pierre de Coubertin.

Sport as a human Right: As he concluded his Olympic Memoirs in the early 1930s, Baron Pierre de Coubertin predicted a healthy future for the Olympic Movement and the philosophy of Olympism.  In a prophetic note, he stated that sport would survive regardless of the political power struggles between the nations of the world. He proclaimed that sport was the birthright of every man, woman and child—and that nothing could replace it. The passage below, which rings with the hopes the Baron had for the survival of his legacy, appears in Legends, the last chapter of his Olympic Memoir. “Anyway, this growing popularity of sport among the working class is an undeniable guarantee for the survival of Olympism—whatever the outcome of the duel waged between two totally opposed social systems for the possession of power throughout the universe. It also implies recognition of the vital fact, strongly contested until quite recently, that sport is not a luxury pastime, an activity for the leisured few, nor merely a form of muscular compensation for mental activity. For every man, woman and child, sport offers an opportunity for self-improvement quite independent of profession or position in life. When the artists superego gets in the way of fulfilling the Mission: In this video, Thomas Jolly prepares for the grand opening spectacle that will inaugurate the Paris 2024 Olympics. He was given two years to prepare an opening performance he knew would be broadcast around the world, but what he came up with made a mockery of Christianity and its 2.4 billion followers throughout the Americas, Europe, Oceania and sub-Saharan Africa. “In the ego psychology model of the psyche, the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual desires; the superego plays the critical and moralizing role; and the ego is the organized, realistic agent that mediates between the instinctual desires of the id and the critical superego;[1] Freud compared the ego (in its relation to the id) to a man on horseback: the rider must harness and direct the superior energy of his mount, and at times allow for a practicable satisfaction of its urges. Around 11,000 of the world’s top athletes have gathered in Paris to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics. In the past two weeks, at least 19 have tested positive for COVID. Many of these athletes compete for Australia or are in aquatic sports. The current count includes, for instance, British swimmer Adam Peaty and Australian swimmers Lani Pallister and Zac Stubblety-Cook. Although only a small fraction of the competitors are known to be infectious, some experts fear a wider outbreak; in the absence of testing requirements, it’s possible many more participants could harbor the COVID-causing virus SARS-CoV-2. The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics implemented strict rules to limit the spread of COVID, including regular testing, social distancing and near-constant mask wearing. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games, by contrast, aim at a return to normalcy. It’s not just that thousands of spectators now fill the stands, where they were once banned.
