Let's talk about a common mistake I see year after year: treating Medica like a sprint when it's really a marathon. Sure, you might collect hundreds of business cards, have dozens of conversations, maybe even close a deal or two on the show floor. But if that's all you're doing, you're missing the bigger picture. Medica isn't just about the four days in Düsseldorf. It's about laying the groundwork for long-term, profitable partnerships. Here's how to do it: Follow-up is key: Don't wait until you're back home. Send a personalized email within 24 hours of meeting someone. Reference specific points from your conversation. Provide value immediately: Share an insightful article, a relevant case study, or a solution to a problem they mentioned. Show them you were listening and that you're a valuable resource. Set concrete next steps: Propose a follow-up call or video meeting within the next two weeks. Have a clear agenda for this meeting. Create a nurture campaign: Not every contact will be ready to partner immediately. Develop a long-term nurture strategy with regular touch points. Leverage technology: Use a CRM to track your interactions and set reminders for follow-ups. Don't let any promising lead fall through the cracks. Alright, Medica veterans, let's talk about a strategy that transformed my trade show experience and could do the same for you. Picture this: It's 2011, and I'm heading to Medica with a radical idea... turning a third of our booth into a distributor lounge. Now, I know what you're thinking. "Zach, have you lost your mind? We're here to sell, not provide a rest area!" But hear me out. Medica is massive - 16 buildings, each bigger than a football field, spread over two kilometers. With 6,000 booths vying for attention, standing out is tough. So instead of just another product showcase, we created a haven for our distributors. We set up couches, a beer fountain (yes, really), coffee machine, and even a coat check. In Düsseldorf in November, that last one's worth its weight in gold. The results? Mind-blowing. Distributors spent up to six hours at our booth. We had about 75 people rotating through our space daily. But here's the kicker - the average distributor sales hours dedicated to our products jumped from 700 to over 1,500 hours. Why? Because we didn't just provide a place to rest - we created a community. Distributors from different countries were swapping stories, sharing presentations, and learning from each other. We didn't just get more sales hours; we got smarter sales hours. The bottom line? Our $18,000 investment led to a $10 million sales boost. So, here's my challenge to you: At your next Medica, think beyond the flashy demos. Create a space where your distributors can connect, relax, and learn from each other. Because in international sales, community is currency. Who knows? Your next big sales breakthrough might happen not in a formal meeting, but over a cold beer in your distributor lounge.
