Today is Giving Tuesday — a time dedicated to supporting nonprofits and community organizations. But honestly, I’ve been feeling uneasy about asking our community (specifically, LGBTQ+ folks) to give when I know resources are already stretched so thin. This year especially, with political changes on the horizon, many are navigating immense financial uncertainty. Instead of looking to individuals for support, larger companies need to take a hard look at their giving practices. Year-round intentionality in corporate philanthropy could make a transformative impact on grassroots organizations like BLACK ALPHABET NFP. This is also why it's critical to exercise our right to vote — especially when policies like H.R. 9495 are at stake. This proposed bill has the potential to undercut the essential work nonprofits do to strengthen government services and boost local economies. A vote NO is a vote to protect organizations like ours that uplift communities when no one else will. If you're in a position to give this Giving Tuesday, we’d love your support. Last week we celebrated National Inclusion Week - a week dedicated to celebrating inclusion and taking action to create inclusive workplaces and communities. 🧡 As part of our ongoing commitment to making sustainable change that matters, our DE&I pillars focus on supporting individuals with disabilities, ethnic minority communities, and women in leadership—and we are proud to have supported several amazing causes that align with these values. 🔵 Sheffield Sports Commentaries We donated to help replace 30 digital receivers that provide commentary for blind and partially sighted football fans at Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United matches. 🔵 Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH) Our donation is helping towards the salary of a helpline officer, ensuring that their free, confidential service continues to provide emotional support and counselling to vulnerable Muslim individuals in need. 🔵 Ruskin Mill Trust Our donation helped purchase apple pressing equipment, empowering young people with special educational needs and disabilities to make and sell apple juice, which not only raises funds but has created a strong sense of pride and ownership for participants. 🔵 Kidney Research UK We supported their work with a donation to fund year two of their HIDDEN-CKD model, focused on reducing kidney health inequalities in Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnicities, and socio-economically disadvantaged communities. It's amazing to see how these contributions are already making a difference. It is possible that the some of the issues (albeit different context) in this will be similar to those considered by the Supreme Court in Agudas Israel Housing Association and Hackney London Borough Council in relation to charities. Another example of the importance of a charity's constitutionally-stated purposes in decisions it takes to further purposes. It is also worth considering how the relationship between a charity and an 'umbrella' charity is documented and the consistency of such a set-up with the suitable independence of a standalone charity.
